A powerful regeneration

As the first Welsh city that greets everyone arriving from the East, Newport holds a strategic position along the M4 corridor. At the present time, the city offers employment for many who live within the region, and economically the city’s profits are above the UK average. On a cultural level, Newport has a powerful identity, and there are lots of opportunities when it comes to leisure and entertainment.

That’s the Newport of now – already an appealing and thriving place to be, yet there’s something exciting on the horizon, something’s that’s going to bring even more success to the area.

The city of promise

A model city: The council’s Project and Design team, in conjunction with developers, have created an all encapsulating vision: for the City of Newport to become a model for other waterfront communities. And the way in which they’ve approached this is by re-engaging; re-focusing on key features of the surrounding environment – like the waterfront, for instance. By embracing new technologies, and employing the help of visionary designers, the aim is to introduce innovative architecture, of the kind which will set the city apart from all others.

The vision: Alexandra Gate will form part of the regeneration of the Old Town Dock area, boasting a mix of highly contemporary residential neighbourhoods and sharp thinking, commercial areas. This great new community will create a welcoming gateway into the city centre from the South. A once in a generation opportunity, this development is set to be a significant component of the 2020 vision – the masterplan – the aim of which is to develop a higher quality of life for those that live there.

See into the future: Decisively put – the Newport in 2020 will be a city which is:
• Prosperous and inviting
• An excellent place to head for social and retail experiences
• Making the most of its environment
• Adaptable to change
• An interesting and diverse community
With so much in store, including the all important Ryder Cup in 2010, it’s a thrilling time for Newport, but the question is – how will all this be achieved?

How? Harnessing the best expertise around, the city centre will be redefined, and extended to feature both sides of the River Usk. The intention is to transform the city into a more vibrant and exciting place for people to live, work, shop and learn; with the commercial core becoming better concentrated to the riverfront. New and more inviting open spaces will emerge, and roads will be transformed into attractive areas for pedestrians, whilst existing areas will be upgraded. Traditional buildings, steeped in history, will be sensitively refurbished to retain their charm.

Where? The Newport Theatre and Arts Centre along the new Riverside Promenade, close to Alexandra Gate, will provide a new civic venue – creating a lively cultural hub on the waterfront. And with the University’s Art, Media & Design School also undergoing a major face-lift, the city is set to come alive with art and creative activity. A Ł200 million overhaul of the commercial centre will create a stunning retail environment, offering a great experience for those with a passion for shopping; and at Alexandra Gate, you’ll not be very far away at all! With improvements being made to the Kingsway Centre, and new sites identified for leading stores, there’ll be no need to travel miles out; Newport could be the new Cardiff!

Grand regeneration: As well as an impressive re-addressing of prime tourist attractions, and significant buildings of the city, many other improvements will be made too. A key opportunity has arisen in the centre of the city; to rebuild and expand the Royal Gwent, and St Woolos Hospital. And it’s been proposed that an area of the Whiteheads site could be used to build new improved regional hospital facilities within the next 15 years, creating a state-of-the-art facility for Newport City. Accessibility will also be a predominant issue, re-thought, in order for Newport to become one of the most inclusive cities in the UK.

Well connected

In a world where time is of the essence, good commuter links are a must. And this is something which hasn’t been missed by Newport’s 2020 Vision. Arriving in Newport should be a wholly pleasant experience. That’s why rail and bus interchanges will be remodelled, car parks easily accessed, and dedicated cycle ways created. Central areas will give priority to pedestrians, and with new promenades, and boulevards, getting to the city from Alexandra Gate should be extremely easy. A model for the future – the ecological, economic and social initiatives on the horizon are sure to secure Newport’s status as a clear leader when it comes to sustainable living.

Gearing up

In anticipation of this major transformation, many sites and landmark buildings are preparing for an image overhaul, including Newport University, the shopping centre, roads, walkways – it would seem not one inch has been overlooked. The community is as eager as the council, and local schools have been involved, in order to raise awareness of the difference this sparkling regeneration will bring about.
