Places of interest
Alltwen Gardens is perfectly placed to explore local historical sites of interest, including some of the old collieries & mines in the area that been turned into museums, such as Cefn Coed colliery museum. Nearby Aberdulais Falls, a spectacular waterfall owned by the National Trust, contains the largest electricity generating water wheel in Europe.
The re-opening of the canal in this area, together with the beautiful local countryside in all directions, provide a wealth of places to visit.
Amenities
Pontardawe offers a range of shops along its High Street, including convenience stores, a bakery and a drapers, along with High Street banks, doctors, dentists and opticians. On the outskirts of the town there is a small retail park with Argos, Homebase and Farmfoods stores, while Tesco also has a large store on the edge of town.
Leisure
Pontardawe has a cricket team, a rugby club and a football club. The playing fields adjoining the Pontardawe Leisure Centre at Parc Ynysderw are one of the 471 King George Fields established as a memorial to King George V. The Cwmtawe Rugby 7’s competition, held at Parc Ynysderw, attracts entries from far and wide.
Pontardawe also has a very successful karate and kickboxing team who train in Alltwen Community Centre, along with a Swim Wales swimming club.
The local golf course is on a hill overlooking the town and enjoys views of the Brecon Beacons and Bristol Channel.
Transport
A dual carriageway links the development swiftly to the M4 for commuting to Swansea and Cardiff.
First Group provides bus services to Swansea, Neath, Ammanford, Ystradgynlais and Brecon.
The nearest railway station is located in Neath, providing trains to Swansea, Cardiff, Newport, Bristol and London.
