Students enjoy a 'constructive' tour of Vision

Mon, Feb 4th 2008, 17:30

The educational trip to Redrow’s Vision development in Devonport was tailored to suit students from City College Plymouth studying for a construction diploma. A permanent link between Redrow and the college has now been forged after an agreement was reached to set up a classroom on the site.

The 14 to 19-year-olds enjoyed a tour around the site and visited the marketing suite, where they were able to view plans, artist’s impressions and models of the finished development.

The teenagers all study in Devonport near to Redrow’s new development Vision @ Devonport.

Peter Elmes, course lecturer, said: “We visited the development as part of National Construction Week so the students could experience first hand a construction site. They learnt about the history of the site and the proposed development and an agreement was made with Redrow to have a classroom set up in a safe area of the site.

“The classroom will provide students with the opportunity to relate their learning to practical experience. We are grateful to Redrow for giving us this unique opportunity.”

Hannah Newnes, area sales manager for Redrow Home (South West), said: “Our Vision scheme is revitalising the heart of Devonport and it’s great that we could give these students the opportunity to experience that transformation first hand.

“They all showed a keen interest in the work that is taking place here and hopefully we will have inspired some budding future architects, planners and even construction managers. We look forward to continuing out relationship with the college when the new classroom is installed at the development.”
The site originally formed part of Devonport town centre, which was heavily damaged in the Blitz. It was subsequently incorporated into the dockyard perimeter by the MoD during the 1950s and enclosed by a three-metre high stone wall, before being declared surplus to requirements and acquired by national regeneration agency, English Partnerships.

It will eventually feature around 460 one and two-bedroom apartments, two, three and four-bedroom houses, including a high proportion of affordable housing, plus a range of shops, office and community facilities. The first properties are being sold ‘off-plan’ and are expected to be ready for occupation in spring 2008.

Currently available at Vision are three-bedroom properties and also four-bedroom townhouses, priced from £174,995 to £223,000.
