Redrow helps school to fly the eco flag

Mynachlog Nedd Junior School, in Neath, has maintained gold status, after first receiving their Eco Flag Gold Award from Keep Wales Tidy two years ago to add to their bronze and silver awards.

The teachers and pupils have been helped along the way by staff from Redrow Homes, who have been building new homes at Cwrt Penrhiwtyn, on Briton Ferry Road, nearby.

Redrow employees gave up their time to help the children to create an eco-garden by donating turf and paving slabs and lending a hand to transport and re-size railway sleepers to border the planting beds.

Susan Jenkins, deputy head teacher, said: “We achieved eco flag status two years ago and I approached Redrow then to ask if they could donate a flag pole so we could display the green flag in the school grounds. They came up trumps then and have been helping us ever since offering their assistance and advice.

“As part of our environment work we have developed a school garden with vegetables, herbs and plants. Redrow have helped us to transform what was a waste area into a place where the children can learn and have fun. They organized staff to move the soil and came back again with workers to cut the railway sleepers. They also organized for paving slabs to be donated, so the children don’t have to get their shoes muddy, before finishing it off with some turf.

“We’re really grateful to Redrow, especially to their site manager Barrie Jones. The children are really enjoying the garden, we’ve just planted an apple tree and we even used the herbs in our Christmas dinner stuffing.”
Rachael Davies, area sales manager for Redrow Homes (South Wales), said: “Redrow is always looking for new ways to get involved in the communities in which we build and we were happy to help out at Mynachlog Nedd Junior School when we heard they required some assistance.

“The children have worked very hard on the garden and should be very proud to have retained their gold status from Keep Wales Tidy.”
Situated just two miles from Neath town centre, Redrow’s Cwrt Penrhiwtyn is a top-class development for families, within easy commuting distance of Swansea, Port Talbot and Cardiff.
