House builder ensures Devonport Park's 150th birthday event goes with a bang

A generous £2,000 donation from home-builder Redrow meant visitors to the Friends of Devonport Park annual event had fun in the sun.

Redrow – who are developing the former South Yard in Devonport – were one of the event’s main sponsors for the second year in a row. This year’s event was particularly special as it marked the park’s 150th anniversary.
The Victorian themed event, which harked back to the year 1858 when the park opened, was an extravaganza of themed music and entertainment.

Victorian games and activities included a fancy dress competition, judged by Redrow’s Mascot Buster the Bear, donkey rides and swing boats.

Redrow also held a competition for visitors to win a flight in the company’s very own hot air balloon, which was won by Dave Brown, of Devonport.
Clare Taylor, community liaison officer for Redrow’s Vision development, attended the event and presented the cheque to Mike Gallagher, the event’s coordinator.

Clare said: “It was a wonderful day and we were very pleased to provide sponsorship once again to ensure this year’s extra special event was a success.

“The Devonport Park event encourages a real sense of community spirit and, as a housebuilder, that is something we value greatly. Redrow is playing its part to enhance the local community by revitalising the former South Yard with our Vision new homes development.”

Formed in September 2005, the Friends of Devonport Park is a group of dedicated volunteers, whose main interest is the preservation and restoration of Devonport Park for the use of all people living in the surrounding areas.
Mike Gallagher said: The Friends of Devonport Park are absolutely delighted with the consistent support we have received from Redrow over the past two years.  The aim of the “Friends” is to promote the wider use of Devonport Park by encouraging closer links between the various communities surrounding the park.  By supporting the restoration and improvement of the park and by staging community days such as this, Devonport Park may well become, once again, a focal point for the whole community.”

Vision is an award-winning regeneration project that is changing the face of the former South Yard enclave and bringing new life to Devonport. It will eventually feature around 460 one and two-bedroom apartments, two, three and four-bedroom houses, including a high proportion of affordable housing, plus a range of employment and retail outlets. The first residents have just moved in.
