Redrow encourages children to play safe during holidays

House builder Redrow is urging Lincolnshire school children to be aware of the dangers of playing on or near building sites during the festive holidays.

With the holiday season coming up, the house builder, responsible for a new homes development at Chestnut Grange, Carlton Road, in the village of Bassingham, is keen to make children aware of the pitfalls of playing at or near building sites.

Redrow’s health and safety manager, Andy Bailey, attended Bassingham Primary School to give a presentation to pupils about staying safe. He says: “Now all the children are about to enjoy two weeks holiday it’s important they know where it’s safe to play out. Building sites can be potentially very hazardous places for young children and therefore it is of absolute importance to drill that message home before the pupils break up for Christmas.”

During the visit by Andy and a team of staff from Redrow Homes (East Midlands), the children were entertained with a short video about the possible dangers of building sites, which featured three children who wandered onto a site. This was followed by a question and answer session, while Redrow’s health and safety mascot, Buster the bear, also attended to add the fun factor.

Redrow also launched a colouring competition, with each child given a poster of a building site, which they must take away and colour in imaginatively. The winning posters will be picked out and the budding artists rewarded by Redrow in the New Year.

Redrow has extended its commitment to education even further by launching the Redrow Learning Web, an on-line resource which includes a teachers’ area to help plan lessons and guide their pupils, meets with National Curriculum requirements and has been accredited by the National Grid for Learning.

The Learning Web is split into two modules – ‘The House Detectives’, aimed at primary school children aged eight to 11, and ‘Plan It … Build It’, which is targeted at secondary school pupils aged 12 – 16 as part of their citizenship studies.

‘The House Detectives’ enables children to compare and contrast their own community with others around the UK, while ‘Plan It … Build It’ challenges pupils to research, plan and ‘build’ a new development taking into account a full range of issues such as housing supply, planning policy, environmental concerns and sustainability.
