Redrow goes the distance for charity

Fri, Oct 28th 2005, 11:00

Redrow employees have proved that no distance is too far where charity is concerned.

Following months of training and a gruelling three hour run, five members of staff from Redrow Homes (Yorkshire) sprinted through the finishing line of the Great North Run, a half marathon spanning just over 13 miles from Newcastle to South Shields.

With generous donations and sponsorship from Redrow, the team clocked up a grand total of over £5,000 for a number of charities, including the NSPCC, The Meningitis Research Foundation, Breast Cancer Research, The Leukaemia and Lymphoma Society and Concern, a charity that is currently helping supply aid to those affect by the Asian Earthquake.

Gary, who lives in Rotherham, was joined in the race by his Redrow colleagues Claire Ellis, customer care co-ordinator, from Harrogate, Peter Harrison, finance director, Mark Leigh, managing director, from Knaresborough, Bill Parker, quantity surveyor, from Warrington, and Neil Parsley, site manager, from Leeds.

However this is not the only example of Redrow doing what they can for charity. In November, Peter Harrison will take part in the 26.2 mile New York Marathon, starting at the Verazano Narrows Bridge and concluding in the fairy tale setting of Central Park.

Peter, who lives in Wakefield, will be running in aid of Whizzkids, a children’s charity that helps supply children with better fitted wheelchairs and equipment, enabling them to lead a more independent life.

With generous support from a number of Redrow’s sub contractors, as well as family, friends and colleagues, Peter is hoping to raise over £1,700, which will go a long way to helping change the life of a child that needs Whizzkids’ support.

Mark Leigh, managing director, said, “At Redrow we are dedicated to doing what we can to support local charities and community initiatives, especially in the areas where we build. The fact that our staff also give their time to raise cash for worthwhile causes is something of which we are extremely proud.”

Redrow’s Yorkshire operation is based in Wakefield and currently has a number of developments throughout north, south and west Yorkshire, including Barnsley, Bridlington, Gilstead, Grimsby, Kippax, Leeds, Norton, Osgodby, Rotherham and Sheffield.
