The 'bear' necessities of building site safety
Thu, Jul 7th 2005, 11:00
Buster the Bear, Redrow’s much loved health and safety mascot, may be a colourful classroom treat but he has a serious and important message.
School children from Afon-y-Felin school at Heol-y-Parc, in North Cornelly, near Bridgend, were invited to ‘paws’ for thought when Buster visited the pupils to talk about the potential dangers of playing on building sites.
Afon-y-Felin school is the latest stop on Buster’s crusade around primary schools across the country. Buster brings with him educational health and safety packs stuffed with fun learning aids, including a colouring picture to highlight hazards and a pairing game to identify the meaning of safety signs on building sites.
Kelly Evans, education co-ordinator at Redrow Homes (South Wales) said, “Buster receives a warm welcome wherever he goes. He may be the children’s furry friend but the Buster health and safety message is a really important one and it’s essential for us to protect and educate the young members of the community. The great thing about Buster is he delivers this message under a fun and entertaining guise.”
Buster is just one of the award winning home builder’s educational activities. Redrow also supports and encourages young people through a variety of learning projects.
Launched last year the Redrow Learning Web is an online learning resource with a range of activities for five to 16 year-olds to work on in class. A separate section of the site is accessible for teachers, which features lesson guidance notes.
For primary school children aged eight to 11 years the Learning Web offers The House Detectives, a fun activity for them to learn more about the communities in which they live. Plan It Build It allows secondary school pupils to act as developers as they plan and market a new community.
Redrow is currently building new homes at two sites in Bridgend. Tir Lan, in Brackla, and Dôl Gorwel, in North Cornelly, both feature family homes in wonderful locations. For more information call the sales team on 02920 731521.
