Young rugby players get cash for kit

Redrow Homes has helped a young rugby team kick their shabby old kit into touch with a £1,400 sponsorship deal.

The Youth division of Merthyr Tydfil RFC, which features 16 to 19-year-olds, now has a new sponsor in the shape of Redrow Homes (South Wales), who recently launched the Gelli Dawel development, off Pantyffin Road, in Merthyr.

Craig Dummett, 44, the team’s head coach, said: "Before the sponsorship with Redrow, we didn’t have enough to pay for decent kits for the first youth team. The money has allowed us to fully kit out the entire squad with team shirts, shorts and socks.

"The team is enjoying great success at the moment, and we are at the top of the Cardiff Blues league with an unbeaten run of eight games behind us.

"We take the game very seriously and it is fantastic that now we can go to matches kitted out the way we’d like. I think this will be a real boost to our confidence as a team.

"It’s great to see a big company like Redrow doing so much for smaller projects in the community like this."

The sponsorship is just one example of the many ways that Redrow gets involved in the communities in which it builds, with a particular emphasis on sport, education and the arts. Glyn Mabey, managing director of Redrow Homes (South Wales), said: "The Merthyr Youth have worked really hard this season and this can be seen in the great results they are achieving. We are delighted to be able to give them this well deserved reward.

"Helping out local teams and projects is really important to Redrow and it is terrific to be able to give something back to the community. Hopefully the new kits will inspire the team to continue their string of victories."

Sponsorships like these, together with charity fundraising, employee volunteering and other initiatives have helped Redrow to retain the Business in the Community % Standard for three consecutive years, a voluntary benchmark which recognises companies that give at least one percent of their profits back to the community.
