Redrow encourages children to stay safe

Mon, Jun 5th 2006, 11:00

House builder Redrow is urging Crawley school children to be aware of the dangers of playing on or near building sites during the summer holidays.

With the holiday season fast approaching, the house builder is keen to make children aware of the pitfalls of playing at or near building sites.

Redrow’s health and safety manager, Steve Sayers, attended Three Bridges Infant School in Crawley recently, to give a presentation to pupils about staying safe. He says: “Very soon the children will be enjoying their six-week summer break so it’s extremely important that they know where it’s safe to play out.

“Building sites can be potentially very hazardous places for young children and therefore it‘s of absolute importance to drill that message home before the pupils break up for summer.”

During the visit by Steve, the children were entertained with a short video about the possible dangers of building sites, followed by a question and answer session. They were also each given a ‘Buster Rules OK!’ health and safety activity pack.

Steve adds: “The ‘Buster Rules OK’ activity pack, which is filled with puzzles and jokes as well as our mascot Buster the bear, has been designed to help children learn about the potential hazards on construction sites – it’s a great tool for parents and teachers to use to deliver the message in a light hearted way.”

Redrow has extended its commitment to education even further by launching the Redrow Learning Web, an on-line resource which includes a teachers’ area to help plan lessons and guide their pupils, meets with National Curriculum requirements and has been accredited by the National Grid for Learning.

The Learning Web is split into two modules – ‘The House Detectives’, aimed at primary school children aged eight to 11, and ‘Plan It … Build It’, which is targeted at secondary school pupils aged 12 – 16 as part of their citizenship studies.

‘The House Detectives’ enables children to compare and contrast their own community with others around the UK, while ‘Plan It … Build It’ challenges pupils to research, plan and ‘build’ a new development taking into account a full range of issues such as housing supply, planning policy, environmental concerns and sustainability.

The Redrow Learning Web, including Buster the bear activity packs, can be accessed at www.education.redrow.co.uk.

Redrow is currently creating an iconic apartment venture in Crawley, opposite Three Bridges train station. Called Porterhouse, the development will comprise of 87 stylish one and two-bedroom apartments with underground parking. For more information call the Redrow sales consultant on 01293 532165.
