As safe as houses...

Putting safety first has brought rewards for staff at a major new housing development in Thatcham.
Redrow’s Kennet Heath development was awarded top marks for its high standard of safety throughout the site as part of a company initiative called the “Safe Six” award. This key initiative focuses on the six main hazards that affect building sites, namely working at height, pedestrian segregation, public protection, housekeeping, health and welfare.
Bob Sayers, director of health and safety for Redrow Homes, says: “Our achievements at Kennet Heath were judged by one of our health and safety managers who awarded a ‘star’ rating per category. We are pleased to say that Kennet Heath consistently received between four and six stars, the highest achievable rating, which means the staff at Kennet Heath are doing everything they possibly can to ensure that the highest safety standards are met at all times.
“The ‘Safe Six’ initiative is based on the over-riding principal that health and safety is integral to everything we do. From the building site right up to the boardroom, integrating good health and safety practice is paramount to all aspects of our business.”
Not content with promoting safety on all its site, Redrow is also taking an important health and safety message out into the communities in which it builds. The company has enlisted the help of its own colourful mascot, Buster the Bear, who spreads the word of caution on Britain’s building sites to primary school children up and down the country.
Bob adds, “Buster has had great success in distilling the need for caution around construction sites to youngsters who may be tempted to play there. As well as visiting schools and being a very memorable figure, Buster’s informative talks - with help from members of our team - are accompanied with a dedicated pack containing key messages and thought provoking activities to educate young children.”
