Bear for thought

Local pupils are given a “Bear” lesson on building site health and safety.
Buster the Bear, Redrow’s much loved health and safety mascot, stopped by at Castle Hill Primary, in Scawthorpe, Doncaster, to help educate pupils about the potential dangers of playing on building sites.
Accompanied by Redrow’s health and safety manager, David Bunyard, who delivered a talk and DVD, Buster handed out his special health and safety packs filled with fun learning aids, including a colouring picture to highlight hazards and a pairing game to identify the meaning of safety signs on building sites.
Teacher, Margaret Featherstone, says: “The children thoroughly enjoyed the visit from Redrow and Buster the Bear. The excellent presentation certainly made them more aware of the potential dangers involved on building sites.”
The visit coincided with the pupil’s geography lesson which focused on how they can make their local area a safer place to live and play in and also linked with PSHCE work on taking responsibility for their own safety and making choices.
Redrow’s David Bunyard adds: “We’ve recently started a new development of houses, Danum St Giles, in Scawthorpe and are keen to get involved in the community in which we’re building. We take health and safety very seriously and Buster’s visits to the schools always prove to be an exciting and interesting time for the children. Castle Hill Primary was no exception. However, although it is a fun way of learning, it should not be forgotten that it is a very important message.”
Buster is just one of the award winning home builder’s educational activities. Redrow also supports and encourages young people through a variety of learning projects.
The introduction of the Redrow’s Learning Web adds to their commitment to education. The on-line resource, which includes a teachers’ area to help plan lessons and guide their pupils, meets the National Curriculum requirements and has been accredited by the National Grid for Learning.
The Learning Web is split into two modules - 'The House Detectives', aimed at primary school children aged eight to 11, and 'Plan It Build It', which is targeted at secondary school pupils, aged 12 - 16 as part of their citizenship studies.
Hoping to make Redrow top of the class with home owners, Danum St Giles is a development of luxurious two, three and four-bedroom homes on Amersall Road in Scawthorpe. For more information about the available homes call 0845 676 0450 or visit www.redrow.co.uk/developments/view/164
