Hottest Home Tech This Christmas

Tech in the home is helping to streamline our lives. It can also provide endless fun for the festive season! We take a look at the best gadgets that are making waves in the home tech world this Christmas.

Hubs to streamline your life

You can hook up the various tech in your home to a single smart home hub device and app, which enables you to control things like heating, lighting, music, your home security devices and even your shower remotely.

While a brand new Redrow home can already save you money on your energy bills - being 40% more energy efficient than a 10 year old home and 70% more efficient than one built pre- 1990* - a smart hub can help you reduce your heating and lighting expenses even further by ensuring they are only used when you’re at home or in the rooms they’re needed.

Smart speakers have taken this a step further and respond to voice control so you can operate everything with a spoken command as well as playing your favourite Christmas tunes all day!

There are a range of smart home hubs on the market but some of the most popular are the 4th generation ‘Alexa’ Amazon Echo from £59.99, the Google Nest Hub Max from £169 and the Apple HomePod from £279.99.

Added peace of mind

Home security has come a long way in recent years and smart security has really taken off. By linking up to your smart home hub you can now control your door locks, alarms, motion sensors and wireless security cameras remotely to keep your home as safe as possible when you’re not there.

There is a lot of kit on the market including the Ring Alarm 5 Piece Security Set from £169, which works with Samsung SmartThings.

Alternatively, you can buy individual items that are designed to hook up to your chosen smart hub – like the Blink Outdoor camera system, priced from £69.99, which works with Amazon Alexa.

Gamers’ delight!

Two of the biggest players in the gaming world have released much anticipated new consoles in time for Christmas. Sony has unveiled the PS5 and Microsoft released its Xbox Series X, with both selling out across the board on their respective launch dates due to huge demand.

Retailers are trying to bring in new stock with the PS5 at Smyths from £359.99 and the Xbox Series X due to be available at Currys from £449.99 but many are getting snapped up as soon as they go on sale.

If you manage to get your Christmas mittens on one, then you can look forward to hours of festive fun as gaming can be a great way to socialise virtually with friends. Don’t forget to do a trial set up the night before and ensure all your updates are done to avoid any Christmas day tantrums. Then the only thing you’ll need to squabble over is who gets the first go and which room to play in!

Tech for fitness fans

Our homes are constantly adapting to changing needs. We now offer plenty of space for home working – with many of our designs featuring a study – but we’re also keen to meet the increasing demand for workout spaces.

Lockdown has turned (some of) us into home fitness fanatics. When we haven’t been able to get to a gym, we’ve all been looking for new ways to work out in our living rooms and bedrooms, with many of us even creating dedicated home gyms. Several of our designs offer an integrated garage that can easily be adapted as the ideal exercise space.

The rise in working out at home has also led to a rise in fitness gadgets to motivate you and track your exercise regime.

Pelaton seized the initiative when it launched a new high-tech breed of exercise bike, which hook riders up to instructors and classes and monitor performance. And they don’t just offer cycling workouts – a range of strength, HIIT, yoga and other classes are available to members. The bikes don’t come cheap, however, with the best value currently from £1,750.

Look out for Pelaton Tread – for running based exercise - coming soon.

Cleanliness, clocks and more…

Gadget fans can further delight in some smaller but equally cool mini gizmos this Christmas. Here are some of our favourites:

  • Banish the winter blues with the Lumie Bodyclock Spark – at £79, an alarm clock that mimics the light and colour of a real sunrise
  • Bring your family games night up to date with a round or two of Pictionary Air – at around £16. Mattel’s modern take on its classic board game uses the air as the canvas and players view sketches on their devices or by casting to the TV.

To ensure your home tech works like a dream, high-speed broadband is a must. All our latest Redrow homes benefit from ultrafast broadband via Fibre-to-the-Premises (FTTP).

And using My Redrow, customers can purchase optional extras, adding finishing touches to their home including Smart Home hubs, Wi-Fi thermostats, media plates, USB points, multi-functional kitchen taps, underfloor heating, digital showers and much more*.

*Choices and optional extras vary by location and house type
