In 2021 a pipe burst in one of the upstairs classrooms at Westhead Lathom St James' CE Primary School resulting in damage to a number of classrooms and children’s books.
After hearing the news, Christina Taylor, a local independent Usborne partner applied to our Burscough Community Fund to replenish the books lost in the flood.
We launched the £3,000 community fund to celebrate opening a new phase at our development in the town – The Grange at Yew Tree Park.
“I was delighted to work as an Usborne community partner with Redrow and Westhead Lathom St James to provide lots of books to the children at the school,” said Christina.
“It is essential that children have access to quality reading materials to support their literacy development and spark their curiosity; in turn encouraging them to develop into successful members of our future generation.”
Kate Tither, teacher at Westhead Lathom St James, added: “Last year, our school was badly damaged as a result of a flood, so this money will go a long way in our ongoing efforts to replenish the affected class libraries.
“We are extremely grateful to Redrow for their kind donation to our school to go towards buying new reading resources. We are also working towards the Lancashire Equality Mark, so we plan to buy books to ensure our libraries reflect the diverse county we live in.”
This voluntary gift to the community is over and above the statutory investment from Redrow as part of the planning process, which includes contributions to community infrastructure of more than £2 million.
Sian Pitt, sales director at Redrow Lancashire, said: “We were saddened to hear about the flood at the school, so we were only too pleased to provide funding to purchase new books for the pupils.
“Our community funds were set up to support organisations working within our communities. We hope these new books are enjoyed by children for many years to come.”
The new phase at The Grange at Yew Tree Park will form an extension to the popular development, located on Liverpool Road South. The 12.5-acre parcel of land will include 169 new homes, 59 of which will be affordable housing.
