Food bank gains extra supplies thanks to community fund

20th December 2022
Redrow - News - Food bank gains extra supplies thanks to community fund

A food bank serving Burscough and surrounding areas has been given funding from ourselves to purchase extra supplies over the Christmas period.

Skelmersdale and District Foodbank and five other Burscough based groups received funding via our Burscough Community Fund.

We will soon begin work on a new phase at its development in the town – The Grange at Yew Tree Park, and to mark this invited its neighbours to apply for a share of a £3,000 community fund.

This voluntary gift to the community is over and above the statutory investment from us, which include contributions to community infrastructure of more than £2 million.

Skelmersdale and District Foodbank serves from four different locations in the area, including Burscough Methodist Church on Orrell Lane.

“One weeks’ worth of shopping at the Skelmersdale foodbank costs approximately £250 to £300,” said Patrick Newland, project manager at Skelmersdale and District Foodbank.

“We will utilise this money to top up our supplies to ensure we do not run out of provisions during the busy Christmas period.

“While many foodbanks just treat the basic need and provide food, we aim to support our clients to ensure they have a good chance of not returning to a foodbank in the future.

“By providing them with three days’ worth of nutritionally balanced food, they are given the chance to save money, look for employment and feed their families during a time of national food crisis.”

The other beneficiaries of the latest fund are Sporting Challenge, St John’s Catholic Primary School, Westhead Lathom St James C of E Primary School, Images of Burscough and Surrounding Areas Community Group and Burscough Bridge Methodist School.

Sian Pitt, sales director at Redrow Lancashire, said: “We are very pleased to provide funding to six groups, who each undertake wonderful work within the community.

“There is a strong sense of community in Burscough and organisations like Skelmersdale and District Foodbank play a part in making it even stronger, with volunteers providing much needed support when residents need it most.”

Our Burscough Fund is linked to a new phase forming an extension to the popular development, located on Liverpool Road South. The 12.5-acre parcel of land will include 169 new homes, 59 of which will be affordable housing.
