Jason Newton, managing director of the North West division, says: “Each year the Echo Awards shine a light on the people who make Merseyside proud and who embody everything that's so great about our region. Since Merseyside is very much Redrow’s heartland – we’ve built more than 2,000 homes here during our 45-year history - supporting them was an obvious fit.
“Jacquie Johnston-Lynch and PJ Smith of Damien John Kelly House were very worthy winners of the Community Personality Award for their work in the field of addiction and recovery and it was lovely to see Jacquie’s reaction when their win was announced.”
Since launching Allerton Gardens, in South Liverpool, we’ve given £10,000 to several local groups, charities and good causes through our Allerton Community Fund.
The recipients have included a new social club that’s bridging the generation gap and helping fight loneliness, speech and language therapy for children with additional needs, Scout hut maintenance, a school community garden project, South Liverpool food bank, a walking group for parents and toddlers and the Marie Curie Hospice.
We also mustered a team of staff, suppliers and sub-contractors who gave a show home style makeover to a bungalow in Liverpool for ‘Little Mermaid’ Sophie Mallon when she left hospital after more than two years. Sophie, from Garston, had not long begun working for us as an administrative assistant when she was struck down with a potentially fatal rare brain disease. She spent the next two years in hospital and even featured on BBC TV’s Hospital. Staff at the Walton Centre nicknamed her Ariel after the Little Mermaid who got her voice back.
The ‘DIY SOS’-style makeover turned an empty bungalow into a lovely home for Sophie, who said: “No words can describe how grateful my family and I are for everything that’s been done with my new home. Everyone has gone above and beyond, and turned a house into a home for me.”
The Allerton Community Fund is just one of many funds across the North West, which have seen us donate circa £150,000 to community groups close to the homes we build. But our commitment to Creating Thriving Communities goes so much further than these voluntary funds or the homes we build.
Jason adds: “We design our developments around eight placemaking principles covering things like easy access to local services, promoting public transport, positively encouraging walking and cycling and designing in generous, accessible and good quality green spaces. Our Liverpool development, Allerton Gardens, includes 10 acres of publicly accessible parkland, plus informal footpaths and meadow grassland for informal play and enhanced biodiversity.”
We also make major contributions to community infrastructure and local amenities through Section 106 agreement attached to our planning consents. Our 2020 Social Impacts Review details £314million of community investment across England and Wales. We have also forged unique partnerships with organisations like the Bumblebee Conservation Trust and the Wildlife Trusts to ensure our developments create homes for nature as well as people.
Allerton Gardens and the newly launched The Groves offer a range of three, four and five-bedroom homes from our sought-after, Arts & Crafts inspired Heritage Collection, currently priced from £460,995 to £942,000. The homes are close to a host of excellent amenities including independent shops and supermarkets, bars and restaurants, good quality schools and popular green open spaces such as Calderstones Park.
