Oliver Parry, 17, and Duncan Wainwright, 18, are the latest recruits to join our apprenticeship programme that helps the next generation of trades to become qualified.
Oliver Parry, from Stockport, attended Bramhall High School and is currently learning the trade at our flagship Woodford Garden Village, under the eye of contractor Loftus Construction Ltd.
Oliver says working as part of a team and seeing his contribution to the homes he is building is one of the highlights of his work so far.
“Watching colleagues who have been working in the industry for years is really insightful and I’m loving being able to put any new skills learnt into action straight away,” says Oliver.
Duncan Wainwright, from Helsby, attended Helsby High School and is currently working with GTB Brickwork at Ledsham Garden Village in West Cheshire.
Duncan found his passion for construction after working on small scale projects with his grandad.
“I got a taste of what’s required and the typical day to day tasks when I was working with my grandad. It’s great being on site everyday as I’m seeing exactly how all the trades come together to build homes, from bricklayers to tilers and everything in between. It’s really opened my eyes to just how much skill goes into building Redrow homes,” says Duncan.
At any one time we have around 250 apprentices in England and Wales learning one of the key housing trades, including bricklaying, plumbing, joinery, electrics and groundworks, as well as administration and technical roles within the office. Together with graduates and other trainees, they make up around 15% of our workforce who are all on some sort of formal training programme.
Jason Newton, managing director of our North West division, says: “The three-year apprenticeships we offer provide real hands-on experience. We try to keep an even number of apprentices in different trades across the programme and as we recently had bricklayers successfully complete their apprenticeship, we wanted to take the opportunity to replace them.
“Oliver and Duncan are developing their skills to the highest standards, combining paid, on-the-job training and work experience with college-based study that will give them essential industry qualifications.”
