The community orchard has received money from our community fund that has been used to protect 150 newly planted fruit trees.
Through a partnership with Manchester Fruit Tree Cooperative, tree guards were fitted during an event held on Apple Day (21st October).
Dr Saroja Forester, a volunteer member of community orchard team, said: “Approximately 150 fruit trees have been planted last year in a project alongside Stockport Metropolitan Borough Council. We also have access to a qualified tree management expert, Dan Hasler from Manchester Fruit Tree Cooperative, who has advised us on how we can best protect the tree against damage done by strimming. It's vital that we care for these trees at this stage as they are just getting established.”
This orchard is managed by 12 volunteers from the local community. The new trees include pear, apple, cherry and quince trees.
“The orchard makes the outdoor space at the Recreation Ground more inviting for people to spend time, encourages wildlife, and fosters great community spirit not only amongst those that care for the trees, but also for everyone who will be able to help themselves to the lovely healthy fruit over the years to come,” added Saroja.
The cooperative regularly holds Tree Protection Action Days, like the one held on Apple Day.
Dan Hasler, founder of Manchester Fruit Tree Cooperative, said: “We’ve been on a year-long journey with Woodford Recreation Ground Community Orchard. We've assisted in orchard maintenance and pruning training and now – thanks to donation from Redrow – we have protected the trees with short metal cages.”
Through our community fund, we have shared £10,000 between ten local groups.
Emily Carey, area sales manager for our North West division, said: “The volunteers from the community orchard have done a great job at creating an area that the wider community can enjoy. It also makes a contribution to sustainable living, of which everyone can experience the benefits. It’s lovely to know that residents at Woodford Garden Village have something like this on their doorstep.”
The Friends of Woodford Recreation Ground are a small group of local volunteers who oversee the maintenance of the community orchard.
