Pupils from Queens Park High School in Handbridge now know about the benefits of cooking recipes from scratch after taking part in a six-week course hosted by Finding Harmony.
The Chester based company works with students from key stages three, four and five and has formulated a programme called ‘Teen Chef, Nourish and Thrive’ to demonstrate to children that there is more to cooking that relying on processed food.
Holly King, founder of Finding Harmony, said: “Our aim is to educate children at an influential age about the joy cooking healthily can bring and for them to pass their knowledge and cooking skills on within their community. The first six-week course went so well at Queen's Park High School that the school asked if Finding Harmony could keep running the course throughout the academic year. Redrow’s donation allowed us to run the course for a few more weeks to the end of the summer term.”
We donated £500 from our Chester community fund which was used to purchase food for the culinary classes.
Holly continued: “We understand the cost-of-living crisis has affected the affordability of food so we have produced recipes that are cost effective and nutritious. During the course we have explained food's positive and negative effects on the heart, diabetes and cancer rates in the UK in a fun and interactive way. To pilot this course we needed to purchase the food to use in the classroom then send home with the pupil to replicate the meal and Redrow’s donation has helped hugely with that.”
Redrow’s area sales manager, Amanda Hollins, said: “We love what Finding Harmony are doing – teaching teenagers how to cook simple healthy meals that can be enjoyed by the whole family. This will set them up with life skills that they can use if they go off to university or for when they have a family of their own.”
