After researching potential options online, Abbie started to see a pattern emerge - most jobs required a qualification or work experience, and as an 18-year-old working in her local coffee shop, she was struggling to find a role that fit what she was looking for.
When she came across the Redrow apprenticeship scheme, she was struck by the scheme requiring no qualifications or work experience. In addition, it meant being able to say goodbye to the confines of a classroom, as she would be learning on the job and developing, practical skills that would develop her career over the long term.
Abbie joined the Redrow Apprenticeship Scheme in June 2018 in customer services and after the two years, passed her apprenticeship with flying colours, gaining invaluable on the ground experience alongside obtaining a level two diploma in business studies.
On her choice to join the scheme, Abbie commented: “Choosing to do an apprenticeship scheme felt like a risk. It wasn’t an option really pushed at my school, and I was the only one of my friendship group choosing to do one. In contrast to being at college or university, I was thrown into my career and learning on the job, but the experience side of things certainly appealed to me.
“Ultimately, I ended up having the best of both worlds – I was being paid to do a job I really enjoyed whist also having lots of time to socialise, relax and live the life of an 18-year-old. It was also a really supportive environment; everyone was so lovely and I had a mentor throughout my apprenticeship.”
Following the apprenticeship scheme, Abbie was taken on full time as a Customer Services Coordinator and since then, has also worked as a Sale Coordinator. She currently holds the role of Marketing Assistant across the South East region.
Abbie continued, “The scheme equipped me with so many invaluable skills that only learning on the job could give me. It opened so many doors for me and kick started my career. I am always upskilling and being challenged to do and learn new things.”
“I really would recommend an apprenticeship to anyone thinking about their next step after school. I wouldn’t change my choice for the world. I actually wish I had started earlier!”
Redrow employs upwards of 250 apprentices at any one time, providing schemes across a range of specialisms, from site management, maintenance, commercial and office-based roles.
