Given the growing demand for these classes, our donation comes at an ideal time to ensure these English Improver lessons are fully equipped to accommodate all those who wish to learn or improve their English skills.
The classes, taught by Sheila Bailey, have been taking place at Concord Church in Aerospace Bristol and have focused primarily on supporting many new people arriving from Hong Kong, who may have limited English. These classes are vital in helping these individuals settle into their new lives in the UK by opening up potential job opportunities and further education for this audience.
Most of the students enrolling in these classes have studied English in Hong Kong and have a reasonable level of reading and writing, but they have not been put to practice. These classes are imperative in supporting the students to receive practical exposure to learning the language whilst being in a community-based environment.
Andy Hawkins, the Chief People, Planet, and Purpose Officer, at Business On Purpose who helped start this initiative comments, “We are delighted to be able to receive such a generous donation. We know how much these lessons have helped our non-native English speakers to feel like they are part of an integrated and supportive community”.
Charlotte Newnes, Area Sales Manager of the Southwest, adds, “We are proud to be a part of such a great and inclusive initiative to integrate all members of our society!”
Since September last year, the course has covered a selection of subjects taken from the “City and Guilds Skills for Life” syllabus that focuses on a variety of different and interesting topics.
Alongside this, the classes hope to support their learners in the longer term by encouraging them to take external English-speaking accredited exams which will prove to be useful when pursuing career plans and vocational training in the UK.
