William O’Toole, 19, is the latest recruit to join our apprenticeship programme that helps the next generation of tradespeople to become qualified.
William, from Woodhouse, Leeds, is completing his joinery apprenticeship and is currently working between our developments Langley Grange in Scissett and Aspen Park in Garforth.
“I have been working with Redrow since August last year and I will be on the course for three years, I’m really enjoying my time here,” said William.
“I had already completed my level one last year, when my tutor told me about this apprenticeship. I was performing well in my class, so it was a coveted apprenticeship.”
William attends Leeds College of Building every week, and occasionally attends in block weeks, where he works on his practical skills in the college’s workshop, including basic hand skills. On site William works alongside a team of joiners, learning traditional joinery skills as well as other aspects of building work.
We took on 111 new apprentices nationally last year and is currently back to pre-pandemic recruitment levels. It will shortly open up applications for this year’s intake. Open to anyone over the age of 16, our apprenticeship scheme covers key housing trades, including bricklaying, plumbing, electrics and groundworks, as well as administration and technical roles within its offices.
William is working under the supervision of Yorkshire’s project manager Gary Woodhouse, whose job it is to recruit and mentor apprentices during their time with us.
“William is doing really well, he is gaining new skills and qualifications during his three-year apprenticeship, as well as gaining real work experience whilst working on our developments,” said Gary.
“This will prove to be a huge advantage for the rest of his career, I wish him the best of luck.”
