Redrow collects for Yorkshire food banks

The majority of our sales centres in Yorkshire are being made collection points for local food banks in the run up to Christmas.

Staff, home owners and other visitors are being encouraged to donate tinned food, rice, pasta etc, plus other non-perishable items including nappies, baby milk powder, toiletries and sanitary products up until December 17, 2020.

It comes at a time when food banks are busier than ever due to the impact of the Coronavirus pandemic on families across the UK. Between April and September, the Trussell Trust, which supports a network of 1,200 local food banks across the UK, gave out 1.2 million emergency parcels to people in crisis from its centres.

A report by the End Child Poverty coalition earlier this year revealed almost a third of children across the UK live below the breadline and said families were already on a “cliff edge” even before the coronavirus pandemic. The steepest rises in Yorkshire and the Humber over the last four years were seen in Bradford and Hull.

John Handley, managing director of our Yorkshire division, in Wakefield, said: “Footballer Marcus Rashford’s campaign for free school meals for children during holidays has thrown a spotlight on child hunger, but the problem runs much deeper than that with food bank use reaching record levels this year.  We wanted to do our bit to help and so are encouraging our staff and our customers to drop off donations at our sales centres. We can also accept contributions from the wider public and will then coordinate getting them distributed to local food banks before Christmas.

“As a builder of primarily family homes, whose key aims include creating thriving communities and valuing people, this is a cause very close to our hearts and one we very much wanted to support.”

Food bank donations can be made at the following locations:

  • The Point/ The Avenue at Thorpe Park, Barrington Way, Leeds LS15 8AD
  • Aspen Park/ The Poplars at Roundwood, Ninelands Lane, Garforth LS25 1NT
  • City Fields, Neil Fox Way, Wakefield WF1 4FU
  • Langley Grange, Pilling Lane, Scissett HD8 9WG
  • Stoney Bank Chase, Stoney Bank Road, Thongsbridge HD9 7SL
  • Saxon Gardens, Low Street, Sherburn in Elmet LS25 6BB

Sales centres are open most days 10am to 5.30pm but check the website for local opening times: www.redrow.co.uk/yorkshire
