Travis Floyd, 18, is two years into his three-year apprenticeship and working at developments in Huddersfield and Leeds.
And the apprentice ceramic tiler is learning from who he considers to be the best in business – his father Steve, a subcontractor wall and floor tiler for us.
“I chose the Redrow apprenticeship scheme as my dad runs his own business and has worked as a subcontractor for Redrow for many years,” said Travis, who lives in Grange Moor, with his parents.
“A typical day for me involves prepping walls and floors and then tiling those areas, ensuring they are finished off to the highest quality.
“For the first two years of my apprenticeship I did a block release at college, working on theory and practical, but, as I’ve only got one more year left now, I don’t need to do anything further at college, so all my time is spent on site.”
The trainee tiler will now spend the rest of his apprenticeship working alongside Redrow’s site management team, gaining valuable experience of working on busy new homes developments.
Open to anyone over the age of 16, our apprenticeship scheme covers key housebuilding trades, including bricklaying, plumbing, carpentry and groundworks, as well as administration and technical roles within its offices.
Trade apprentices’ time is split between working on site and college-based study that will provide the apprentice with essential industry qualifications.
“Redrow is a well-run company, and everyone is friendly and easy to get along with,” added Travis. “I would highly recommend the apprenticeship scheme here.”
The apprentices are all employed by ourselves but supervised and mentored by established sub-contractors who help to teach them their trade. They also come under the overall supervision of Gary Woodhouse, project manager at Redrow Yorkshire, who is involved from the initial process.
Gary, 60, from Rotherham, is a joiner by trade and has been employed by us for the past 25 years, working as a customer care manager and then project manager.
“We currently have five apprentices working with us here in Yorkshire, and we are hoping to take on a further three this year,” said Gary.
“This apprenticeship scheme is a brilliant way to start of a career in construction, applications are made via the Redrow website.”
