Redrow welcomes 250th apprentice in ten years

An apprenticeship programme has given 250 young people their first step onto the career ladder over the last 10 years.

Leading housebuilder Redrow has now recruited Jack Moore as its 250th apprentice in the company’s annual recruitment drive around England and Wales.

Jack, like the other recruits, will spend three years as an apprentice, splitting his time between working on-site and attending college for his carpentry and joinery NVQ.

The 16-year-old from Ellesmere Port has now completed his first month based at Redrow’s Ty Newydd development in Wrexham.

Jack said: “I always knew what I wanted to do for a career, my whole family is in the building trade. I applied for the apprentice scheme straight away because I wanted to learn a good trade and I eventually want to be a fully qualified joiner which takes three years.

“It is really good so far and I’m really enjoying it. I like the balance between doing the work on-site and at college too as every day if different and gives you more experience.”

Jack added: “I would say to anybody considering an apprenticeship to just go for it. I’d advise when you are on-site or at college to make sure you ask lots of questions so that you learn more and you always know what you are doing.”

During his apprenticeship, Jack is working with sub-contractor Joe Unsworth. Joe began his career as an apprentice with Redrow and will be training Jack in his chosen trade.

Sub-contractor Joe, from Liverpool-based R Joyce Joinery, said: “I have worked with a few apprentices before, it is basically about showing them what to do and giving them advice, answering their questions.

“Jack is doing a good job so far, he is asking all the right questions, doing all the right things and getting stuck into it.

“I finished as an apprentice about six years ago and because I have done it myself I know what it is like. After that I worked for other firms but have been working together with Redrow for the past three years. It is good to be back where I started off.”

Redrow is believed to have one of the best apprentices to employees ratios (1:16) in the industry. The firm believes apprenticeships are a key component for maintaining a skilled workforce and thus securing a successful future for the house building industry.

Three employees who took their first step on the career ladder as Redrow apprentices were recently promoted to assistant site managers, a step which proves the value of a trade apprenticeship.

“With over a million 16-24-year-olds unemployed in the UK, it’s vital firms continue to invest in young people to ensure we have skilled workers for the future.

“In a highly competitive job market, work experience is as important as qualifications and an apprenticeship gives people both. It’s a viable option for those who don’t want to get into debt paying high university tuition fees.”
