Redrow employee nominates charity for funding boost

A charity that provides care to cancer patients will be able to run its outreach service this month thanks to a donation of £5,000 from house builder Redrow’s national charity.

Wirral Holistic Care Services (WHCS) has been providing care and support services for cancer patients and emotional support for their families and carers for over 24 years.

The Redrow Foundation’s donation has been ear-marked for the charity’s outreach programme, which helps people who are not well enough to attend the therapeutic cancer centre.  It means a nurse therapist will visit and care for the client in their own home to enable them to have continuity of care at a time when they require the additional support to improve their quality of life.

After receiving support from WHCS personally, Redrow employee Judith Irving nominated them for a donation. She said: “I visited Wirral Holistic Care in 2010 while I was undergoing chemotherapy for breast cancer. I was given reflexology there and it was such a welcome break from the clinical environment where I was having my other treatment. It’s a wonderful relaxing place to go to and was very beneficial to me during my treatment. I hope this donation enables even more people to benefit as I did.”

The Redrow Foundation is the national charity of housebuilder Redrow Homes, which builds new homes across England and Wales. It provides financial support for the relief of poverty and sickness in the UK and, in particular, to provide accommodation and related assistance, including respite care, especially to children, the elderly and those who are sick or infirm.  To date it has contributed almost £400,000 to a wide variety of good causes.

A nursing-led organisation, WHCS provides a welcoming and positive environment for patients with a clear focus on individuals’ needs. Its services include a drop-in facility, telephone helpline, planned individual nurse assessments and planned individual therapy sessions.  Clients can self-refer without going through their doctor and the organisation will not turn anyone away who could benefit from its help.

In the past year it has dealt with over 16,000 contacts, which includes giving information via the telephone help line and face to face contact with clients and their carers.

“Without the help of Redrow we would not be able to implement the outreach project this month”, said Thelma Sutton, PA to the chief executive at WHCS. “With the fantastic grant of £5,000 together with the help of monies from other grant-making organisations, we have now reached our set target for our outreach programme, which will enable us to implement the project from mid May.  Our very grateful thanks to Redrow for their support.”
