Housebuilder helps homeless charity

A charity will be able to engage with the homeless for a year and provide much needed support thanks to a donation from housebuilder Redrow.

Simon on the Streets offers street-based assistance to people in Leeds, Huddersfield and Bradford, who are homeless or at risk of becoming homeless. This assistance includes front-line emotional and practical support to help them access the services they need to make positive changes to their lives.

In Leeds the charity helps more than 100 people a month and provides intensive support to around 45 people in that period.

The donation of £5,000 from The Redrow Foundation will fund its soup run for a year and, in doing so, will have other, more important knock-on effects.

Clive Sandle, director of Simon on the Streets, said: “We aim to support people that so many forget by helping them access the services that they need to make positive changes to their lives.

“We’re extremely grateful to The Redrow Foundation as the donation of £5,000 will finance the soup run for 12 months. The food we offer is important because the people we support are hungry, but our aim is not to feed people; it is to have meaningful, positive engagement with them – the food is an incentive to access the service.”

Simon on the Streets was nominated for the donation by John Handley, commercial manager for Redrow Homes (Yorkshire), based in Wakefield.

John said: “Simon on the Streets does tremendous work in the local community and requires ongoing support to continue to assist those in need. It was an honour to visit the charity and find out more about its valuable service.”

The Redrow Foundation is a national charity, founded by the housebuilder Redrow, which builds new homes across England and Wales. It provides financial support for the relief of poverty and sickness in the UK and, in particular, to provide accommodation and related assistance, including respite care, especially to children, the elderly and those who are sick or infirm.  To date it has contributed more than £450,000 to a wide variety of good causes.
