Housebuilder Redrow Homes has been shortlisted for a St John Ambulance Everyday Heroes Award for its efforts to place more than 100 lifesaving defibrillators at sites across England and Wales.
The Flintshire based company is a finalist in the ‘Organisation of the Year for First Aid Excellence’ category. The award will go to the organisation that demonstrates an outstanding level of investment in first aid awareness, equipment and training of staff.
Redrow Homes is one of the UK’s leading homebuilders, directly employing 1,550 people and providing work for around 7,000 contractors each month. Around 40% of Redrow’s current direct workforce hold a first aid qualification and in the last 12 months alone 123 staff members have undertaken training or a refresher course.
Over the last year, the vast majority of its divisional offices and more than 100 live sites have been provided with life-saving AEDs (automated external defibrillators) and all staff are offered training on these.
A defibrillator delivers a therapeutic dose of electrical energy to the body to restore a regular heartbeat. A survey by the Institute of Occupational Safety and Health has indicated that the device can increase the chance of survival from a sudden cardiac arrest by 75%.
Redrow’s AEDs are also registered on a national database, which provides details of these to local communities and members of the public.
Dave Ford, health and safety director for Redrow Homes, said; “We’re immensely proud to be in the running for this award and delighted that our efforts to enhance the health and wellbeing of our workforce, contractors and others in the community have been recognised.
“Defibrillators save lives every day and having access to such lifesaving equipment in the workplace and within local communities is extremely important. Sadly, we lost a colleague to a sudden cardiac arrest in 2013 and we wanted to see what could be done to reduce the risk of a similar tragedy happening again. We now have an AED fitted at the vast majority of our new developments and divisional offices, which can be accessed not only by our workforce, but also by people living in the new communities we are building.”
St John Ambulance’s Everyday Heroes, supported by Physio-Control, is a special awards programme celebrating the incredible stories of ordinary people who have used first aid to save a life. The awards are also a chance to recognise individuals and businesses that have championed the cause, helping to create more first aiders in our communities.
The winners will be announced at the black tie awards ceremony on July 1 at the luxurious Lancaster London Hotel.
