National housebuilder Redrow Homes has welcomed reforms announced by the Prime Minister yesterday (Oct 7) in his speech at the Conservative conference.
David Cameron pledged to change "generation rent" into "generation buy", confirming the Government’s Starter Home initiative would go ahead and planning rules would be changed to allow housebuilders to build starter homes in place of affordable homes for social rent.
John Tutte, Group chief executive for Redrow, said: “This announcement is a positive step towards ensuring enough homes are built to satisfy demand in the UK, including properties that first time buyers can afford.
“Our aim is to provide housing for people at every stage of life, from first time buyers to families, and we are already providing affordable homes to buy on many of our developments.
“Government help has so far been crucial to the market’s recovery, most notably through the Help to Buy scheme. A change to planning regulations to allow starter homes to be built in place of homes for affordable rent should help to increase the number of viable sites for development.
“Not only do our developments provide much needed housing, they also contribute positively to local economies; providing funding for schools, health and community facilities and vital infrastructure as well as stimulating employment.
“We very much look forward to receiving more details on how the initiative will work and getting on with delivering much needed homes for first time buyers.”
