Four Sittingbourne schoolchildren have visited the KMFM studios to professionally record a radio commercial promoting energy efficiency after winning a regional competition.
Redrow Homes invited schoolchildren across Kent and Essex to create a 60 second audio commercial to explain to other young people how important energy saving measures are in the home and raise awareness of how new homes are built with energy efficiency in mind.
Bobbing Village School won a public vote via Redrow’s YouTube channel to beat two other shortlisted schools chosen from a total of 55 commercials entered.
Run in partnership with UTV Media through its ‘ucreate’ Schools Project, successful year 6 students Stephanie Cleveland, Chloe O'Brien, Abigail Wilding and Rebecca Wilson have now had their commercial professionally produced at KMFM, while Redrow has contributed £500 for sustainability projects at the school.
Year 6 teacher Lisa Bunning said: “We entered the competition as I thought it would be a useful and enjoyable way for my class to learn about an important global issue. The children benefitted from having a real purpose to their learning and were able to improve their understanding about energy efficiency, their speaking and listening skills, as well as using modern technology to produce their adverts.
“Although they were steered in the right direction, I felt it was important that the children were able to work independently and create their own final product.”
The group recorded the commercial with KMFM’s head of production Dave Moses and also met Drivetime presenter Rob Wills, Breakfast Show presenters Gary Wilson and Emma Adam and Afternoon Show presenter Jason King who gave them some expert tips. The recording session was also filmed for Redrow TV, the housebuilder’s online video channel.
Lisa added: “The radio station treated them as VIPs and the children had fun seeing first-hand how a radio station operates. Judging by their beaming smiles, I think this an experience they will remember for a long time.
“Bobbing Village School is always keen to participate in competitions or events that enable our children to learn about the real world, particularly about local and global issues that will affect them as the next generation.”
Nicola Owen, sustainability manager at Redrow Homes, said: “We’re delighted with the final commercial and congratulate the pupils at Bobbing Village School on their well-deserved win. They have an admirable enthusiasm for energy saving and the issues that affect their environment. The standard of entries was really high and I’d like to thank everyone who entered.
“Our aim was to raise awareness of how energy efficient new homes can be, helping reduce carbon emissions and our customer’s energy bills. It was a great opportunity to engage pupils in this important subject.”
