Redrow gives under-graduates a stepping stone to career progression

University students are being given the chance to gain vital work experience and build essential knowledge and skills as Redrow launches recruitment for its 2013 placement programme.

Typifying Redrow’s commitment to investing in young people and training, it runs an annual under-graduate training programme, which provides work experience for students as well as benefitting the industry by identifying potential future stars.

It’s already a proven path to a successful career as two undergraduates who previously undertook 12 month placements with Redrow have now been given full time positions with the company.

In July last year, Redrow welcomed back Sam Bullough, who undertook a placement with the housebuilder from August 2010 to September 2011. Sam has now taken up the position of assistant designer after completing his degree in architectural technology at The University of Huddersfield.

Sam said: “I found the programme massively beneficial for my chosen career. It especially helps you to understand how a company works and how its different departments come together. The placement also prepares you for working life after university, I felt after I completed the 12 months I knew exactly what to expect when it came to working full-time.

“I have settled into my new role as assistant designer now and I am really enjoying it. It is quite similar to what I was doing on the placement but with more responsibility. I found out I got the job when I was in a lecture last year and it was very difficult to contain my excitement! It was also a massive relief because I know how tough the job market is at the moment and I believe the experience Redrow provided me with played a vital role in my success for landing such a fantastic role. I would say to anybody thinking of applying for the programme to absolutely go for it, it is a great opportunity that provides you with priceless experience for your career.”

Another recruit who is relishing the opportunity provided by Redrow is James Morgan. Cardiff University student James, who undertook a 12 month placement at Redrow South Wales in 2011. After completing his degree in City and Regional Planning later this year, James will continue to build on his experience when he re-joins Redrow in September as a graduate trainee.

James said: “The undergraduate placement offered by Redrow has been fantastic hands on experience within the industry. I’ve got so much out of it. It’s not about making the tea; it’s about adding real value to the company. I’d say to anyone who wants to work within the housebuilding industry that Redrow is a fantastic employer offering undergraduates the chance to experience working in the private sector.

“I have successfully applied for Redrow’s graduate training programme, so I will soon have a chance to broaden my experience even further and work in different departments. I’d like to continue to progress my career with Redrow and eventually apply for a full time role.”

Undergraduate students are paid a salary for the period they are with Redrow, and the placements are available in a number of departments including construction, sales, commercial, engineering and design.

Martin Gilpin, human resources manager for Redrow, said: “The under-graduate placement programme is an ideal opportunity for university students to gain fundamental experience in their chosen career path. The job market is extremely competitive and this programme gives them the perfect chance to gain the edge over the competition and forge a successful career in housebuilding.

“By committing to the recruitment and training of young people we will ensure that we continue to attract talented individuals to work in the sector.”

The 2013 recruitment drive has now officially begun and successful applicants will begin their 12-month programme in July. They will be based at Redrow’s divisional offices and on development sites across England and Wales. The deadline for applications is Friday, May 3rd.
