Redrow launches in-house training for budding designers and engineers

Young people with a passion for design and engineering have been taken on by Redrow Homes after the housebuilder launched a new technical apprenticeship programme.

Following a successful pilot scheme last year, Redrow has now developed a bespoke course with Coleg Cambria, based in North East Wales, which results in formal qualifications and is delivered in-house.

Eight new recruits started the course in December and will now work towards a BTEC Level 3 in Construction and the Built Environment and an NVQ Level 3 in Civil Engineering or Architectural Design.

Karen Jones, Group HR director said: “This course has been designed in conjunction with Coleg Cambria to ensure we have a steady stream of talented and enthusiastic young people coming into the business each year who will then be trained to fill specific design and engineering roles in our technical departments. Apprentices will follow a structured learning programme while working alongside our team of experienced professionals.

“We’re offering them a fast paced environment and the chance to grow and thrive within our rapidly expanding business.”

The course will focus on aspects of designing new housing developments, including planning and drawing site layouts, as well as engineering design for roads, sewers and utilities to service new homes.

Steve Jackson, deputy principal, corporate and commercial services, at Coleg Cambria, said: “We’ve worked with Redrow to design a course that meets their business needs and provides apprentices with the skills and knowledge they need to become the designers and engineers of the future. They will combine classroom learning with onsite experience and receive formal qualifications upon completion. It’s perfect for those who want to build their skills while training on the job.”

Redrow has one of the industry’s best records for training and developing its staff, with 15% of its workforce having official trainee status. As well as apprenticeships, the company nurtures young talent through under-graduate work placements and post-graduate training. Redrow recently earned a place in the top 100 apprentice employers in England in 2014, as well as the 2014 Building Good Employer Guide - an independently compiled list of the construction industry’s top 50 employers, both for the second consecutive year.
