With headquarters in Ewloe, Flintshire, the housebuilder is one of just a handful of Welsh companies in the running for an award in the Training and Developing Staff category.
With a strong policy of personal development for all employees, Redrow hopes its record on training existing staff as well as its commitment to recruiting young people will impress the judges.
Karen Jones, HR director for Redrow Homes, said: “As well as developing the skills of existing staff, our aim is to nurture young talent through apprenticeships, graduate training programmes and other schemes. Not only does this benefit us as a company, it also has industry wide benefits and helps to ensure there are no skills gaps in the future.
“We are delighted to have been shortlisted for a Welsh National Business Award and look forward to the winners being announced.”
Redrow directly employs circa 1,000 people, 377 of them in Wales. It was the only homebuilder to feature in Building magazine’s 2011 Good Employer Guide. Judges described career progression as one of Redrow’s “standout benefits”.
The recruitment of its 250th apprentice in the last 10 years recently marked a major milestone and its ratio of apprentices to employed staff (1:16) is believed to be one of the best in the industry.
Other schemes run by the housebuilder include a successful graduate training programme, annual undergraduate work placements, a trainee sales consultant programme and sales management trainee programme.
Redrow continues to invest in its existing workforce, with more than 2,300 training days delivered to directly employed staff over the last year, much of them at the company’s dedicated centre in Tamworth.
The Welsh National Business Awards, run by the Institute of Welsh Affairs and the Western Mail, celebrate the achievements of businesses in Wales. A total of nine awards will be handed out on November 9th at a ceremony at Cardiff’s City Hall.
