Apprentice Ben Wins Top 'Trainee' Award

House builder Redrow has paid tribute to its apprentices and the valuable contribution they make by awarding its most talented trainees an ‘Apprentice of the Year’ accolade.

The developer has bestowed the title of ‘Apprentice of the Year’ on 12 talented individuals who have impressed judges with their performance in the last year, and highly commended a further nine. Among them is Ben Finch, from Wigan, winner of the Redrow Homes (Lancashire) title.

Each year Redrow recognises the success and hard work of its apprentices. Nominated by colleagues in the business and their NVQ coordinators, winners are selected based on progress with their qualifications, how they have overcome and worked through adversity and challenges, as well as evidence of how they have ‘gone the extra mile’.

Working for a FTSE 250 company, Redrow’s trainees work in a face paced, dynamic environment and have plenty of opportunities for career development. The business offers a wide range of apprenticeships, including in the trades of carpentry, plumbing, electrical and bricklaying, as well as office-based apprentices in a variety of administration, technical and commercial roles.

Lancashire Apprentice of the Year, Ben Finch, 18, is close to completing the second year of a three-year plumbing apprenticeship.

Having worked at a number of developments including Dukes Manor in Walkden, Harbour Village in Fleetwood and The Hedgerows in Clayton-Le-Woods, he is currently working at Lucas Green, Whittle le Woods, Chorley.

Ben said: “It’s a pat on the back for a job well done so I am really pleased and proud.

“It says I have not just done my job well but that I have gone that extra mile, done that little bit more. It doesn’t change my ambition, I have always said that I want to progress through the levels with Redrow, but it does motivate me more than ever and gives me the hope that my aims are achievable.”

And he added: “The credit doesn’t just go to me though. It goes to Steve who is my sub-contractor manager and Redrow’s construction director Keith Collard, both of whom have supported me, taught me and encouraged me.”

Eager to praise Ben, Keith Collard, construction director for Redrow, said: “Ben’s assessments throughout the year have been exceptional with him achieving top scores in every quarter. But more than that, Ben is highly motivated with a drive and a real commitment to succeed and do well.

“But he is a team player too. Ben is a hardworking and articulate young man with a great future in the industry. We need more of him.”

Equally glowing about Ben was Steve Roberts, owner of Prestige Plumbing and Ben’s sub-contractor manager.

He said: “I took Ben on as a 16-year-old and his progress has been exceptional. He has taken to the trade like a duck to water and performs tasks I would expect a third year apprentice to do – and he was doing them in his first year!

“And I know I’m not the only one to sing his praises – everyone does. Ben is a ‘can do’ person – I have been doing this job for 33 years and had lots of apprentices but Ben is, by far, the best I have ever known.”

Two Lancashire apprentices were also highly commended: Joe Joyce, second year joinery apprentice from Speke, Liverpool; and James Hall, third year joinery apprentice, from Preston.

Karen Jones, HR director for Redrow, said: “It is a pleasure to be able to recognise the achievements of apprentices like Ben, Joe and James taking great strides in developing their career with us.

“Apprentices are vital to ensuring a skilled workforce for the future and, as one of the top 100 apprentice employers in England, we are fully committed to investing in their learning and development.”
