Award Success for Simon second year running

A Lancashire site manager has scooped a Pride in the job ‘Quality’ Award for the second year running.

Simon Nix, 50, was among a record number of Redrow’s employees to receive the sought-after industry award from the NHBC (National House Building Council) for his work at Redrow’s Hedgerows development in Clayton-le-Woods.

And it’s doubly rewarding for Simon who secured the award for the first time last year, while leading the Wigan Road development. And Simon has picked up a prestigious health and safety award too.

“I’m delighted,” said Simon, from Leyland. “You just keep trying to improve and raise the standards. Personally, I always aim as high as I possibly can and it’s really good to know that my efforts have been acknowledged.

Not only has he won the Pride in the Job Quality Award, Simon, who last year went on to pick up an NHBC Seal of Excellence in the same competition, has collected a Health & Safety award from the organisation too! He received the H&S Commendation at the gala awards dinner on July 7.

“It’s been a really good year and I am proud to be in this position,” admitted Simon, who has been a site manager for 16 years, the last seven of which have been with Redrow.

“It is recognition from people in my industry who know what it takes to win these awards. It does take hard work. It’s about always wanting to be better and never resting on your laurels, never thinking ‘well I’m there now I can relax’.

“I am lucky because I have had the same, great bunch of lads working with me for the last two and half years at The Hedgerows. They know what I expect, and they work with me to strive for the highest possible standards we can achieve.”

Simon, who is married to Michelle with whom he has a son, Joshua, aged nine, added: “Two years on the trot for Pride in the Job is great – but that means my aim now is to get it a third time next year. That’s my drive.”

Pride in the Job has been highlighting excellence in the field for more than 35 years and is dedicated to recognising site managers who achieve the highest standards in housebuilding. Around 16,000 site managers undergo the judging process in small, medium, large and specialist housebuilder categories and, this year, Redrow received a record 27 Pride in the Job awards across England and Wales.

Judging for the awards includes spot checks of the day-to-day running of sites, plus assessment across 38 areas of site management, including each manager’s technical knowledge, consistency in the build process, leadership and organisational skills.

With his place in the top 450 of UK site managers secured, Simon will find out this autumn whether he’s progressed again to the next stage of the NHBC’s competition and won another ‘Seal of Excellence’, which would put him in the top 130 elite.

John Tutte, Redrow’s chief executive officer, said: “We’re very proud of all of our winning site managers, and that a record number have been recognised for the second year running. The fact we count 27 of the industry’s best site managers amongst our colleagues is a reflection of the high standards we uphold across Redrow.

“It’s a rigorous judging process and only the best in the business achieve the ‘Quality’ awards. The fact we continue to improve year-on-year demonstrates our commitment to continually improving the high build quality of our homes.”
Now in their eighth year, the NHBC Health & Safety awards are designed to recognise and reward the very best in health and safety; and are also helping to drive up safety standards in the industry by showcasing and sharing best practice.
