They may work at two different developments but site managers Will Mills and Tony Diprose have one very important thing in common – commitment to their work!
And it has won each of them a prestigious NHBC Pride in the Job 'Quality' Award.
Will and Tony are among 24 Redrow site managers to win the award out of a total of only 430, and a staggering 15,000 who undergo the judging process. It is dedicated to recognising site managers who achieve the highest standards in housebuilding.
It's the first Quality award for Tony, 45, who leads the Harbour Village site in Fleetwood and it has come in his first year of working for Redrow. A delighted Tony said: “I have been trying to win one of these awards for years so it means so much more because of what it is worth to me.
“These awards are so hard to get, they don't hand them out like sweets, you have to earn them. It feels great that I have earned mine and with Redrow.”
Will Mills, 34, who heads up the site construction team at Redrow's new development The Pavilion at nearby Poulton-le-Fylde, agreed: “Over the last few years I have come very close so to finally win an award is a real achievement.”
Although both men were quick to point out they didn't win the award alone and success reflected the efforts of everyone on site. “It's a team effort,” added Will.
Father-of-two Tony, who has twin 10-year-old daughters Daisy and Olivia, has worked for Redrow for just 10 months, having been a site manager elsewhere for eight years.
He said: “It's a difficult job but the rewards come with meeting the challenges. It’s all about overcoming challenges, dealing with them, creating a good site and being consistent.
“If the lads know what you expect, they will respect that. I want a happy site where people want to come to work, but I want people to put that extra few per cent in and work to a very high standard – the best.
“Our site is very much a team effort and I couldn't have won this award by myself. The guys have won it with me.”
Barring a four-year break, Will has worked for Redrow since 2004. He started as a joiner, going on to gain HNCs in construction management and other qualifications to NVQ level 5.
The dad of three young girls from Fulwood said: “I enjoy what I do because building fascinates me. The different houses, the different challenges. As a site manager it is important to build a happy team around you, who will not just do the job but do it well.
“It's a good atmosphere on site. It's like a football team. If everyone does their job, what they're asked for, we will get results.”
Judging for the Pride in the Job Awards began 12 months ago and includes spot checks of the day-to-day running of sites, plus assessment across 38 areas of site management, including each manager's technical knowledge, consistency in the build process, leadership and organisational skills.
Will and Tony will now go through to the next level of the Pride in the Job Awards this autumn, when they will be hoping to collect a 'Seal of Excellence'.
Keith Collard, construction director for Redrow Homes (Lancashire), says: “Redrow takes pride in building better homes so people can enjoy better lives. But it starts when we start building and with people like Will and Tony. The pride and care they take in their work means we can offer people beautiful homes they can be proud of, from a company they can trust.
“We wish Will and Tony, and the others within Redrow, the very best for the next phase of these awards.”
The Pavilion, on Station Road, Poulton is one of Redrow’s newest developments and the first homes are due to go on sale this August. It will feature 39 four-bedroom family homes within walking distance of the town’s railway station.
Harbour Village, meanwhile, is an ongoing development on the tip of the Fylde peninsula, combining a wide range of two, three and four-bedroom homes, including some larger executive homes with picture windows and balconies overlooking the Wyre estuary. As well as houses, Redrow has recently begun installing a new £1 million swing bridge, which will provide a pedestrian and cycle link from the town, through the development, to Fleetwood Marsh Nature Reserve and the Wyre Estuary Coastal Path.
Established more than 40 years, Redrow Homes is one of the UK’s leading house builders, with a £1billion turnover and building more than 4,000 homes in 2014/15 financial year.
Operating across England and Wales, there is a strong emphasis on providing high quality homes in prime locations and its housing ranges feature designs to suit all lifestyles:
• The Heritage Collection combines traditional looking, ‘Arts & Crafts’ influenced exteriors with bright, modern, high specification interiors.
• The classically styled Regent Collection features Georgian inspired street scenes and architecture.
• Redrow has also launched a new brand of contemporary homes in Abode, which boast open plan layouts with streamlined kitchen, dining and lounge areas, high specification wet rooms and outdoor living space.
