Young pupils at a Whalley school have been learning how to stay safe near building sites after a visit from Redrow’s health and safety mascot Buster Bear and his keen apprentice Buddy.
As well as meeting Buster and Buddy, 25 children from the reception class and years one and two at Oakhill heard about the potential dangers from Redrow staff and were introduced to some of the safety equipment builders must wear.
The visit followed the launch of Redrow’s Lawson Rise development, on Clitheroe Road, which is less than a 10-minute walk from the independent day school in Wiswell Lane.
Year 2 teacher Karen Wilson, said: “All of the children promised they would never set foot on a building site when they found out how dangerous they could be. They really loved meeting Buster and Buddy Bear and were still talking about them the next morning in registration. The message came over really well and the children enjoyed learning about all the safety equipment and clothing, it was an interactive, fun talk.
“The talk was particularly relevant as Redrow’s development is just at the bottom of Wiswell Lane and the children see the site almost on a daily basis. Building sites can look very appealing to children with diggers and other things that might be tempting to climb on, however they now know that such sites are out of bounds – and why.”
Redrow is building a range of four and five-bedroom detached family homes at Lawson Rise and recently opened a new showhome.
Lancashire-based marketing coordinator Janine Edwards, who was accompanied on the visit by sales consultant Mel Tonge, said later: “We’re committed to the communities in which we build and it was great to be given the opportunity to talk to the pupils and raise awareness of safety on construction sites. We’d love to do more of this kind of activity in the surrounding area.”
