Redrow helping to ring the changes at Buckley church

A group of bell ringers in Buckley have chimed up to thank a local housebuilder after it stepped in to assist with funding for essential maintenance work to their church bells.

The campanologists at St Matthews Church have welcomed the donation of £500 from Ewloe-based Redrow Homes.

It means the group have taken a major step towards raising the total of £6,000 required to carry out a major renovation of the church bells, which has not been carried out for 50 years.

Anita Williams, sales director for Redrow Homes (NW) said: “We’re building new homes very close to St Matthews Church at our Heathlands development in Church Road, so when we heard such a worthy local cause was in need of funding we were happy to step in. The church bells can be heard from Heathlands and across Buckley and they bring joy to many so we are delighted to be able to move the group closer to their fundraising target.”

The St Matthews bell ringers will be holding a sponsored ‘ring-a-thon’ on Saturday September 1st at 2pm and are hoping other local businesses and residents will show their support and sponsor them.

Bell ringer Claire Carter, from Mold, starting ringing in her early teens. After taking a 30 year break from the hobby while she raised her family, she decided to take up the pastime again at St Matthews. She said: “We’re all very grateful to Redrow for such a generous donation. It has provided us with a huge boost towards being able to carry out the essential maintenance work to the bells which they so desperately need.”

With a practice session once a week, the 12-strong group also rings before Sunday service and for weddings.

Claire added: “We’re always on the lookout for new members so if there’s anybody in Flintshire who wants to take up a fun new hobby that is sociable, then we’d love to hear from them.”

The group meets every Wednesday evening between 7.30pm and 9pm. Anyone interested in joining them or sponsoring the ring-a-thon can contact the tower captain Geoff Parting at the church on 01244 550645.
