Dan Recognised for Taking Pride in his job

A former apprentice turned site manager has been awarded a Pride in the Job ‘Quality’ Award after only 18 months in the role for Redrow.

Dan Cato, 24, was among a record number of the housebuilder’s employees to receive the prestigious industry award from the NHBC (National House Building Council) for his work at The Pavilion in Poulton-le-Fylde.

Dan, from Fleetwood, has also been Highly Commended at the NHBC Health & Safety awards too.

“I only became a site manager in January last year, working initially at Riverside View in Lancaster, so I am really pleased to have won these awards so early on in my new role,” said Dan.

“I started as an apprentice joiner with Redrow when I left school in 2008, but I always wanted to progress up the career ladder. I was assistant to two other site managers, Shaun Phoenix and Stuart Bullough, who were both award winners; and they instilled in me the desire to do well and aim for the best – and secure a Pride in the Job award.

“I didn’t want to let them down but, even more than that, I didn’t want to let myself down, so I put pressure on myself to achieve the standards needed to win.”

Although Dan added: “I could never have done it alone. A site manager is only as good as the group of lads he works with and I have had a brilliant team at The Pavilion. We have worked really hard to be where we are – and I’m already planning for the next award. I will try to keep the team focused and continue to drive the message for high standards home.”

Having already been commended in the NHBC Health & Safety awards, Dan found out at the ceremony on Friday (July 7) that his award had been upgraded to Highly Commended status. Indeed, of 25 Highly Commended awards given out on the night, four went to Redrow site managers from across the country, including Dan.

Now in their eighth year, the H&S awards are designed to recognise and reward the very best in health and safety; and are also helping to drive up safety standards in the industry by showcasing and sharing best practice.

Meanwhile, Pride in the Job has been highlighting excellence in the field for over 35 years and is dedicated to recognising site managers who achieve the highest standards in housebuilding. Around 16,000 site managers undergo the judging process in small, medium, large and specialist housebuilder categories and this year, Redrow received a record 27 Pride in the Job awards across England and Wales.

Judging for the awards includes spot checks of the day-to-day running of sites, plus assessment across 38 areas of site management, including each manager’s technical knowledge, consistency in the build process, leadership and organisational skills.

With his place in the top 450 of UK site managers secured, Dan will find out this autumn whether he’s progressed to the next stage of the NHBC’s competition and won a ‘Seal of Excellence’, which would put him in the top 130 elite.

John Tutte, Redrow’s chief executive officer, added: “We’re very proud of all of our winning site managers, and that a record number have been recognised for the second year running. The fact we count 27 of the industry’s best site managers amongst our colleagues is a reflection of the high standards we uphold across Redrow.
“It’s a rigorous judging process and only the best in the business achieve the ‘Quality’ awards. The fact we continue to improve year-on-year demonstrates our commitment to continually improving the high build quality of our homes.”

For those interested in the homes Dan and his team are responsible for building at The Pavilion, a fully-furnished show home is open daily from 10am to 5.30pm. For more information see or call 01253 275818.
