Double awards success for Wrea Green site manager

SITE manager Martin Caldwell has so much confidence in Redrow's homes that when he bought his own property it had to be one of theirs – even though he worked for a different company at the time!

But now Martin is helping to maintain the quality which shone for him – and winning himself and Redrow awards in the process.

Martin, 34, from Lytham, who heads up the workforce at Ricksby Grange, in Wrea Green, has just received a commendation in the 2016 NHBC Health and Safety Awards – and will now go forward to the national finals in Birmingham on July 8.

The NHBC Health and Safety Awards are the UK's only health and safety awards aimed solely at home builders and are designed to recognise the very best in that area, and help drive up standards in the industry by showcasing and sharing best practice.

A record 61 first round winners, including five Redrow developments and their site managers, are through to the finals where they'll discover if they've won a higher award – highly commended, national runner-up and overall winner.

And, if that wasn't enough reason to celebrate, Martin has also been named one of 24 Redrow site managers to be awarded the NHBC's Pride in the Job 'Quality' award too.

“I'm feeling good,” he admits. “The awards are really important and it means I have done my job well.

“The drive is for your site to be the best it can possibly be all day, every day. It's about safety and quality all the time. I expect the best all the time.”

A site manager for 10 years, Martin has won Quality awards and two coveted Seals of Excellence in the 'NHBC’s Pride in the Job award scheme in the past. He graduated in construction management before building a career and a name for himself within the industry and joined Redrow three years ago after buying his own house from them.

Martin explained: “I was back and forth to the development and Shaun Phoenix, site manager for Redrow at the time, recognised me from previous awards’ ceremonies. He asked me if I was interested in working for Redrow at their Beacon Point development, in Lytham, which was right on my doorstep – so I couldn't refuse.

“Redrow is a great company to work for because the care and quality it stands for runs throughout, from its employees to its homes to its customers.”

Under Martin's leadership Beacon Point, now completed, won the LABC Best Large Volume Housing Development for the North last year.

He has been at Redrow’s Wrea Green development for just over a year: “Being a site manager is a hard job, looking after the site, the customers and my lads. But I enjoy it and now I'm looking towards the next level. I want to progress in my career and continue to take pride in what I do.”

Highlighting excellence in the field for the last 35 years, Pride in the Job is dedicated to recognising site managers who achieve the highest standards in housebuilding. Around 15,000 site managers undergo the judging process in small, medium, large and specialist housebuilder categories and Martin is one of only 430 to receive in the award. He’ll find out if he has added a third Seal of Excellence to his tally later this year.

Judging began 12 months ago and includes spot checks of the day-to-day running of sites, plus assessment across 38 areas of site management, including each manager's technical knowledge, consistency in the build process, leadership and organisational skills.

Keith Collard, construction director for Redrow Homes (Lancashire), says: “Redrow takes pride in building better homes so people can enjoy better lives. But it starts when we start building and with people like Martin. The pride and care he takes in his work means we can offer people beautiful homes they can be proud of, from a company they can trust.”
