Site Manager - Steve

Footie Coach Steve is in a League of his Own

Football coach and manager Steve Daw is used to getting the best out of his young team – but the dad-of-one has just scored his own victory too.

Steve, 41, from Skelmersdale, has been voted Site Manager of the Year for premier housebuilder Redrow’s Lancashire division, and he is delighted to have achieved what, for him, was a personal goal.

“It has come after 12 months of really hard work, and it is fantastic, it is an absolute honour,” said Steve, who is based at Summerhill Park, in Liverpool. “It is confirmation that I am doing something right and, after only two years in the role, it was a real positive.”

The team player was keen to point out, though, that credit wasn’t only due to him.

“I’m a great believer that it really is a team effort, between me and the lads on site and the sub-contractors. So it reflects well on them as much as it does on me. But that goes for Redrow as a whole. From the minute I joined the company I have had nothing but support and encouragement – I couldn’t praise Redrow highly enough and I certainly would never want to work for anyone else now.”

A joiner and carpenter by trade, Steve has also worked as a self-employed shop-fitter and kitchen fitter, as well as undertaking social refurbishment projects and, even, holiday apartment renovations abroad.

He has worked for Redrow for eight years, joining as a tradesman before securing his current role as site manager for the Springfield Apartments phase of Summerhill Park.

The award was presented for all aspects of site management, including elements such as building to an agreed programme, health and safety, working to budgets and good customer service, all helping to ensure that homebuyers are safe in the knowledge that they are buying a new home built to the highest standards.

At Summerhill Park, in the Broad Green area of the city, Steve and his team are responsible for delivering the 23 Springfield two-bedroom apartments, as part of a wider development that features more than 400 two, three and four-bedroom homes from Redrow’s much-praised Arts & Crafts inspired Heritage Collection.

And it is the pride with which Steve fulfils his role here that has won him such praise and plaudits.

Shaun Phoenix, area construction manager for Redrow Homes (Lancashire), said: “Steve likes things done right, he likes them done properly. He takes great pride in what he does and it shows. He always works to programme and completes schedules on time and, crucially, he gets the best out of everyone around him too.

“When someone has such commitment to their job it has a knock-on effect with everyone around them; that, and the fact that Steve is willing to roll his sleeves up and get stuck in when necessary, means he gains huge respect. That is why he so deserves this award.”

As well as the prestigious title, Steve won a cash sum with which he has treated his son, Hayden, as well as partner Denise and her three children. “Without their support too, I wouldn’t be able to do what I do,” he added.
