A Community First Responder (CFR) team in the Preston area has a new piece of life-saving kit thanks to a donation from Redrow Homes.
Redrow has paid for the purchase of a new defibrillator (also known as an AED), for New Longton CFR, to assist the team in its work providing emergency care across areas of South Ribble and Preston, in support of the North West Ambulance Service.
Community responders provide support to the regular ambulance service by attending serious and life threatening 999 calls in and around local neighbourhoods to provide the earliest possible intervention for patients in the first few minutes until the arrival of an ambulance.
Laura Foxon, New Longton CFR team leader, explains: “Responders are everyday members of the general public who give their time freely and are trained to deal with a wide range of potentially life threatening conditions. Very often the role they play is one of reassurance, for example in instances where someone has chest pains, but in more extreme cases they can perform CPR (cardio-pulmonary resuscitation) or use a defibrillator to restart someone's heart.”
Mark Yates, area sales manager for Redrow (Lancashire), along with sales advisor James Miskell, was delighted to hand over the new equipment at a presentation at Redrow’s development, The Hedgerows in Whittle le Woods, Leyland.
He said: “It is a pleasure for us to make this contribution to the excellent work of the New Longton CFR team. We are committed to supporting the communities in which we operate and to helping keep people safe.”
Redrow has installed more than 100 lifesaving defibrillators of its own housing developments across the UK, as well as in the company’s divisional offices, giving staff, contractors and the local community access to the equipment in the event of a medical emergency. All staff are offered training on how to use them and around 40% of Redrow’s workforce also holds a first aid qualification. Redrow’s AEDs are registered on a national database, which provides details of these to local communities and members of the public.
Laura continues: “It is often the case that the ambulance service is stretched so it’s important to make sure we have trained community responders, with the right equipment, covering our towns and villages. Donations such as this from Redrow go a long way to help us and can literally save lives. We are very grateful for the support.”
A defibrillator delivers a therapeutic dose of electrical energy to the body to restore a regular heartbeat in the event of a cardiac arrest. A survey by the Institute of Occupational Safety and Health has indicated that the device can increase the chance of survival from a sudden cardiac arrest by 75%.
