Housebuilder gives Hartford lipreading group a £1,000 boost

A lipreading group in Hartford is now much more secure of its future after housebuilder Redrow donated £1,000 to the cause.

After opening its trio of Hartford developments in 2015 Redrow launched its first Hartford Community Fund and invited local groups and projects to send their requests for help with funding. Now the housebuilder is on to its second Hartford fund even more local causes are benefitting, the Hartford and District Lipreading Group being one of them.

The group was previously supported by the local council but after funding was withdrawn early in 2015, they were left with no option but to fund themselves by charging an entrance fee and hold small fundraising events. When the group’s secretary, Christine Stalker, learnt of Redrow’s work in the community, she was quick to apply.

Christine said: “When our funding was withdrawn we faced losing our precious classes which are a lifeline to many of our members. Rather than disband and lose our valuable social resource, we decided to find a venue, and to fund our class ourselves.”

The classes are now held at the St John’s Parish Centre on School Lane, Hartford and welcome those of all ages with hearing loss from all over Cheshire. The group teaches the attendees how to lip read but also educates their family and friends on how to finger spell so they too can communicate better with their loved ones who have hearing loss – a great tool when talking in more noisy environments like cafes and restaurants.

She added: “We’re extremely grateful to Redrow for their support. We get to learn about new advances in hearing equipment and technology but what’s more, it’s great fun. There is always much laughter and the value that the classes bring to our lives is tremendous.”

Jason Newton, sales director for Redrow (NW) added: “When we first opened our developments in Hartford we were keen to play a part in building community links as well as homes. We are absolutely delighted to have been able to assist the lip reading group and we hope they continue to not only learn how to lip read but also enjoy it as a social occasion.”

Redrow has a range of executive family homes available, from three to five-bedrooms, across three developments in Hartford - Hartford Grange, Weaver Park and Hunter’s Chase. For more information see For more information about the group, see
