Neil Rankin, a nurse at Lancaster Infirmary, has found a brand new home to accommodate himself and his car renovating bug!
The 35-year-old had all the usual items on his property wish-list such as a fully-fitted kitchen and handy en-suite, but driving his ambitions was a good-sized garage to house his hobby.
“I was living in the centre of Lancaster in an apartment which I loved, but it was a 15 minute walk to my garage, which cost me £1200 a year,” says Neil. “I was desperate to have a home with its own garage so I could just tinker with my car whenever I wanted and which wouldn’t cost me a fortune.”
The Government-backed Help to Buy scheme, with its 20% equity loan, made it easier for Neil to afford a brand new home and that all-important garage for his beloved motor.
“I’ve got a 1965 VW Beetle which was half renovated when I bought it and I finished the work. I love it and it’s great now I can just give it a bit of spit and polish and work on it any time I wish,” Neil explains.
“I’m now living a little further from work but still close, so I tend to use my bike which only takes a quarter of an hour and saves any parking problems.”
But Neil invested in his Abode 1050 at Riverside View in Lancaster for reasons other than somewhere to simply store his treasured Beetle. “I like apartment living and so this was perfect,” says Neil. “It’s open plan and modern which I’m used to and prefer. To be honest it’s like city centre apartment living but with an upstairs as well.”

Neil says: “I used Help to Buy and I literally couldn't have moved without it. It has allowed me to get the house I wanted now, and pay back as and when I am able."
