Two colleagues from Redrow Homes’ Abode Lancaster development are all set to put their best foot forward for charity.
Waseem Barnes and Andrea Baldwin are taking on the Cross Bay Challenge at Morecambe Bay in support of CancerCare on August 7.
Their employer Redrow Homes is also sponsoring the overall event to the tune of £1,000.
Participants have the choice of running or cycling a half marathon across the bay from Hest Bank, near Lancaster, or walking seven miles from Silverdale further north, each to the finish point at Flookburgh in Cumbria.
“We weren’t sure we were up to the full half marathon so decided we would take on the walking challenge instead,” says Waseem. “Andrea is a keen cyclist so is perhaps being kind to me as I am more used to walking and doing zumba than tackling long distances running or on a bike!
“We were keen to volunteer to take part as CancerCare is a great charity doing good work supporting families affected by cancer and other life-limiting conditions in North Lancashire and South Lakeland. The Challenge is a way of raising money in support as well as raising awareness and it’s also an opportunity for us to get fit.”
Redrow is sponsoring the team and donations are being pledged by sub-contractors and other supporters, including friends and family.
Waseem, 33, is from Chorley, while Andrea, 51, hails from Bamber Bridge, near Preston.
Although the challenge is flat, it crosses shifting sands and sea, so it’s no mean feat to complete. The walk, supported by expert guides, starts at Gibraltar Farm campsite in Silverdale, out towards Ulverston and takes in the scenery in a northerly direction to finish at the Flookburgh foreshore. It takes approximately three hours to complete.
It will all be a far cry from Waseem and Andrea’s usual surroundings, when they can be found selling Redrow’s contemporary looking Abode homes at Riverside View, in Lancaster, alongside the River Lune. Current prices are from £239,995 for a three-bedroom detached home with a stunning open plan ground floor layout, under-floor heating and en-suite to master bedroom.
