Plumbing apprentice Ben Finch is feeling flushed with success after being voted Property Apprentice of the Year.
The Wigan teenager was given the prestigious title at the North West Property Awards
held in Liverpool.
Ben, 18, who has just started the third year of a plumbing apprenticeship with Redrow Homes (Lancashire), says: “I don’t really know why I have done so well, but I suppose I chose this path and so I realised that it was down to me to prove myself. When I do anything I always try to do it well and to the best of my ability. And, when it comes to it, I enjoy what I do - and that certainly helps.
“I guess knowing what other people think of you makes you really proud. Now I want to concentrate on completing my training and taking any opportunity that’s offered to me.”
Redrow tapped into Ben’s talent and hard work ethic when he was 16, having just left Byrchall High School in Ashton-in-Makerfield. Keen to start working and develop a trade, he began working for the developer combined with day release at Wigan and Leigh College.
Ben’s dedication was obvious from the word go, taking the role seriously and committing himself to his studies for which he consistently gains top marks; and earlier this year he was named Redrow’s own Lancashire apprentice of the year. His keenness also saw him swapping roles with Keith Collard, Redrow’s construction director, during National Apprenticeship Week to find out what life was like on the other side of the house-building business.
Although he is currently working at Lucas Green
at Whittle-Le-Woods, Chorley, Ben has been based at a number of other Redrow developments including Dukes Manor in Walkden, Harbour Village in Fleetwood and The Hedgerows in Clayton-Le-Woods.
Steve Roberts, owner of Prestige Plumbing and Ben's sub-contractor manager, says Ben’s progress has been exceptional, performing tasks in his first and second years that would be expected of a third year member of the team: “He has taken to the trade like a duck to water, he is an absolute 'can do' person and a real team player. I have been doing this job for 33 years and Ben is by far the best apprentice I have ever had.”
Redrow’s Keith Collard agrees: “Ben has done so well and both Redrow and Prestige Plumbing are exceptionally proud of him.
“He is a hardworking and articulate young man with a great future in the industry. We need to capture more of the Bens in this world. He has already been voted Redrow’s apprentice of the year, and this latest award shows how merited that was. He stands head and shoulders above other apprentices and has got management potential either within Redrow or running his own business once qualified.”
At the same award ceremony, organised by Your Move property magazine, Redrow’s four-bedroom detached Henley house design at Lucas Green, Chorley, was shortlisted for Show Home of the Year and Best New Home.
