Newly promoted engineering manager Steve Cole and design manager Chris Dobson have risen through the ranks as national housebuilder Redrow expands it technical team in the North West.
Recently promoted to managerial positions from their respective roles as senior engineer and senior designer at Redrow’s Daresbury-based NW division, Steve and Chris have both climbed the career ladder since joining the company and their success is reflective of Redrow’s reputation for promoting from within.
Both are part of an expanding team at Redrow NW, which is targeting continued growth this year. Over the last 12 months the division has increased the size of its design and engineering team by a quarter to keep pace with the number of homes being built.
Steve, 54, originally from Leeds, joined Redrow in January 2013 with a wealth of experience and graduated in July with an MSc in Construction Project Management. Steve said: “I joined Redrow as a senior engineer, having just returned from a second period of working in Australia. I saw the opportunity to join a company I had always heard good things about.
“The opportunity of promotion to engineering manager arrived at exactly the right time as I had just graduated. The previous two engineering managers had both been promoted from within as well, which demonstrates that Redrow encourages this approach and also supports ongoing learning at any age.
“I enjoy the problem solving element of the role and managing a great engineering team of eight people, which has doubled in size since April. The business is fast paced so requires adaptability, a broad knowledge and an ability to coordinate a team.”
Chris, 31, from Durham, joined Redrow in September 2011 having gained significant experience as an architectural designer and completing his MSc in Project Management. He has steadily developed his career at Redrow, securing a promotion to senior designer in 2014, before his most recent promotion to design manager.
Chris said: “I’ve always been interested in the design of buildings and spatial planning. Originally fixated on becoming an architect, Redrow diverted my path to working as a layout designer which offered more diversity and opportunities.
“Redrow is a great place to work and grow. It must have impressed me as I moved 170 miles for the job and I haven’t looked back since. Redrow has encouraged me to grow personally through a combination of in-house training and on the job experience, which has allowed me to move up through the ranks.
“Every day is different and a new challenge; managing a very busy and growing department, juggling the needs of our current build sites as well as implementing future strategy for developing forthcoming sites.”
John Grime, managing director of Redrow Homes (NW), said: “Our emphasis continues to focus on strategic growth, illustrated by the expansion of our technical team. Steve and Chris have both been important members of this team for some time and I’m delighted to see them develop their careers with us. With their vast knowledge and experience of the technicalities of residential developments, their promotions ensure we are well-placed to continue to build on our recent successes.”
Redrow Homes (NW) has a number of high profile developments across the region. Earlier this year it launched Woodford Garden Village, near Stockport; a sustainable development of up to 950 homes including substantial investment in green spaces, on-site amenities and a new primary school. This coincided with the launch of Ledsham Garden Village, near Ellesmere Port, which will see up to 2,000 homes built over several years, again in keeping with the principles of sustainable garden village development.
Strategic future sites include a joint development in Nantwich with Taylor Wimpey and David Wilson which, subject to planning, will deliver around 950 homes, and development of land adjacent to Redrow’s Daresbury headquarters for 1,200 new homes.
