Members of a pensioners’ club in Penrhosgarnedd, Bangor, are celebrating with tea and cake after receiving a £250 donation from housebuilder Redrow.
Clwb Y Garnedd, which is a member of the Contact the Elderly charity, meets at Canolfan Penrhosgarnedd every last Friday of the month for 10 months of the year for social events as well as various trips.
Members pay a small amount at each meeting but missing out on grant money this year had left them short of funds so they approached the team at Redrow, who are building new homes at Goetre Uchaf nearby, for help.
Enyd Roberts, co-ordinator for Clwb Y Garnedd said: “The social events we organise are so important to our members as it’s a chance to meet up with friends and have the opportunity to enjoy themselves. In the past we’ve had trips to museums, afternoon tea and summer and Christmas parties. The money Redrow has donated will help us to continue to finance these events and we are very grateful for that.”
The club, whose members are aged over 70, is the first recipient of Redrow’s dedicated Bangor Community Fund, set up last year to help a wide range of groups in the local area. The fund is in addition to Redrow’s contribution, as part of the planning process, of over £1.4m towards education, highways, local cycle paths and playing fields and parks in the local area.
Jason Newton, sales director for Redrow Homes (NW), said: “We really value our relationships with local communities and we’re delighted to be able to help such a lovely group.”
Redrow is building two, three and four-bedroom new homes at Goetre Uchaf, on the outskirts of Bangor, commanding views across the breath-taking North Wales countryside.
