As one of Redrow’s sales consultants, David, 22, is acutely aware that many would-be homeowners think they won’t be able to afford to buy. But he and Laura, 21, are the perfect example of how this isn’t necessarily the case.
Despite being more than a decade younger than the average first time buyer, they are proof that the Government-backed Help to Buy scheme is helping make homeownership more attainable.
The couple now live at Fox’s Fold in Barton upon Humber, the very development where David is selling a range of three and four-bedroom homes.
“We were both living with our parents near Hull before we bought,” David explains. “I was in Willerby and Laura was in Anlaby. After saving for a deposit for about six months we realised that we could purchase a home of our own much sooner than we expected with Help to Buy.
“It made a big difference as it meant we only needed a 5% deposit and could take out an equity loan for up to 20% of the price. Plus, moving to Barton meant we got a bigger house than we would have been able to afford on the other side of the Humber Bridge. All in all it’s been a win-win situation and excellent value for money.”
David adds: “Now that we’ve bought our first home our friends are thinking of buying too as they realise it’s easier than they thought. Many people our age wrongly think they will need at least £15,000 for a deposit and, believing they will never have that sort of money, decide to rent instead. Laura and I are proof that if you put your mind to it and save you will soon have a deposit for a brand new home. We only needed to put down around £6,500 with Help to Buy.”
David and Laura, who works as a part-time teacher, are now the proud owners of a three-bedroom Farnell style property overlooking the development’s public open space. Their spacious homes is laid out over three floors and includes a sumptuous master bedroom with en-suite on the top floor. The other two bedrooms are both doubles.
David says: “I’m always telling customers that a new home represents better value than an older second hand property that needs a lot of work doing. It was great knowing that we wouldn’t have to pay thousands of pounds more on top of the price of the house for a new kitchen or bathroom. Plus, as it’s our first home, we would have had to buy all of the kitchen appliances for a second hand property. Thankfully the brand new oven, microwave and fridge freezer are all included in Redrow’s standard specification.”
He adds: “Working for Redrow made me realise how much new build homes have to offer buyers. I’ve seen plenty of customers move into Fox’s Fold and they’re all happy so I thought ‘why don’t we move here?’.
“Everyone who lives and works at Fox’s Fold is really friendly and there’s everything you could need in Barton. It’s a nice, quiet neighbourhood with a village feel and a semi-rural location, close to the Lincolnshire Wolds. Hull is easily accessible and the return trip across the bridge is now only £3.”
Current availability at Fox’s Fold in Tofts Road, Barton, includes three and four-bedroom homes in a choice of styles. Prices start from £143,950 or an initial outlay of only £115,160 with Help to Buy. The lower prices includes a 5% deposit of around £7,000 and a 75% mortgage. The remaining 20% share is covered by the equity loan, which is interest free for five years.
