HOMES located off Wike Ridge Lane in Shadwell – just named as the best street to raise a family in Leeds – were some of the first examples of a new style of family homes by Redrow.
The sought-after location was chosen by Redrow back in the early 90s for a development of the company’s then ‘New Heritage Range’.
Fast forward more than 20 years and those early prototypes were used to shape Redrow’s current and hugely popular Heritage Collection.
Designs have been updated in-line with advances in building techniques, new materials and changes in taste, but essentially those family friendly North Leeds homes were the blueprint for similar designs still being built on Redrow developments across England and Wales today.
Wike Ridge Lane, in Shadwell, recently topped the ‘Family Friendliness Index’ researched by online property firm Property Detective. Every Leeds postcode was examined and factors such as the number of green spaces, schools, local amenities and crime rates were all taken into account.
Redrow’s Wigton Park development of 153 homes, accessed directly from Wike Ridge Lane, was influenced by typical 1930s’ styling, such as rounded full height bays, hipped roofs, arched entrance porches and leaded windows with patterned coloured glass. Today’s Arts & Crafts inspired Heritage Collection – currently popular at Horsforth Vale, in Leeds - displays some similar features.
Robert Sandler and his wife moved into a previously-owned Redrow home on Wike Ridge Mews in December 2003, just seven days after their first child was born.
Robert, managing director of Mint Commercial Interiors, in Leeds, said: “It’s not hard to see why this area has been named the most family friendly in Leeds. It is in a fantastic spot, just five-and-a-half miles from the city centre but on the edge of beautiful countryside. Redrow’s development has a great layout with cul-de-sacs, no ‘cut throughs’ and plenty of green spaces, good schools and amenities nearby.
“Although over 20 years old, all of the homes look as good as new because they have been maintained really well. The fact that there is a mixture of house types makes it feel very inclusive. We’ve now got two children, and they both love it here. I’m sure the area will still be rated as highly in decades to come.”
Redrow is delighted that its designs from over 20 years ago have stood the test of time so well.
Patsy Aicken, sales director for Redrow Homes (Yorkshire), said: “Our current Heritage Collection and, before it, the New Heritage Range both feature homes based on one of the most enduring and popular styles of architecture. Also estate agents will frequently highlight that a home they’re selling was Redrow-built, which only serves to emphasise our reputation for quality.
“That the area around Wike Ridge Lane where we built these homes has been singled out all these years later as ideal for families is wonderful news.”
A few miles away in Horsforth, Redrow is meeting the demands of today’s homebuyers at Horsforth Vale, in the popular north Leeds ‘village’ of Horsforth; an area that also fared well in The Property Detective’s survey. Clarence Road, just a few minutes’ drive from Redrow’s new homes, also made Leeds’ top 10 list, scoring highly for its great schools and family facilities.
Patsy added: “The results are good news for everyone, even those who don’t have children. If the area is known to attract parents or parents-to-be for lots of positive reasons, that can only be good for property values. We’re hopeful that our Horsforth Vale development - already making strides and winning national awards - will be topping surveys 20 years from now.”
Redrow recently launched a new brand of contemporary looking homes known as Abode, which boast streamlined open plan layouts. The homes are on sale now at Horsforth Vale alongside Redrow's Heritage Collection.
